Question for EBF moms re: bottles
How do you figure out how much pumped milk to put in a bottle? When my son was 2 weeks old, the ped said he should be having 2-4 oz. so we started with 3 and he seemed good with that. He's now almost 4 months, and we've just been increasing it by 1/2 oz. whenever it seems that he is looking for more at the end of a bottle. He now takes 4.5 oz. I had heard somewhere that breastmilk changes as the baby gets older to meet their growing nutritional needs, so you don't need to increase the amount after a certain point. Is this true? Can anyone shed any light on this? Going to the ped next week and I will def ask but figured I'd see if anyone here knew anything about it. TIA!

Re: Question for EBF moms re: bottles
the bottle i give ar simialr to what i pump - my DS is 7 months and he gets about 6-6.5 oz in each bottle and 1 oz for cereal - he only gets two bottles a day while i am at work - i usally pump between 12-14 oz in the two pumping sessions so i split that into two bottles

Re: Question for EBF moms re: bottles
DD has had 4-5 oz bottles since I went back to work at 3 months, and she is now 6.5 months.
We have not changed the amount she gets in a bottle.
I unfortunately am pumping less and less per session, so she usually gets 2-3 oz BM and 2 oz formula.
She is full after her bottle so we have not increased it. Also, now she is getting solids too.

Re: Question for EBF moms re: bottles
it is always hard to judge how much bm to give bec they will rarely refuse a bottle bec it is so much easier than the breast...
when I gave bottles...(and this went for both DCs) I gave 2 oz the first couple of weeks...and then I increased it about a half oz every month or so...until we plateaued at 5-5.5 oz ...my DCs never took more than that and were at this amt for the entire year!
It is true what you said -- it doesn't increase and compare to formula amts! bec the consistency changes to meet the needs of your baby over time!

Re: Question for EBF moms re: bottles
BM isnt meant to be "measured" so its really hard to tell.... Id say give him how ever much he wants.

Same here. Although my son was born big (over 11 pounds), he was always a small eater. He just ate frequently. He drank out of the 4 oz bottles until he was around 11 months. But we typically only filled them with 3oz.
Believe me, we tried to give him 4-5 oz in a sitting, but he would let an ounce or two just sit there. We never questioned it. But, like I said, he always enjoyed smaller meals. He was gaining weight and all was well. Just the way he did things. He only ever ate off of one breast at a time too. So, all kids are different. But God forbid you ask my MIL, she said I starved him and he needed steak by the age of 3 months.
