Question about utlities when renting...

I know it will vary for every house, but for those that rent/have rented, and utilities weren't included, was it a crazy amount of money every month?

I've never rented where utilities weren't included, and dh and I are trying to rent a house and the one we fell inlove with doesn't include anything. This is why I ask.

How can I prepare myself?

Re: Question about utlities when renting...

I think your bills will be comparable to everyone that owns a house. My gas bill this month was 206 and my electric was 126 (which is a little high for us). It also depends on how efficient things are in the house for the gas bill. Before we got a new boiler our will was closer to 400 in the winter for gas.

Re: Question about utlities when renting...

I rented a townhouse in a complex (a drafy one with cheap windows and a loft where all the heat went) and my Electric was around $1400 for the year and the Gas was I think $1200. I was always on the budget plan, which I really recommend so you don't get a $300 bill in the winter.

ETA we had central air that was always on 70 in the Summer.

Re: Question about utlities when renting...

Do you have air conditioner(s)? We never did because we lived in a cool breezy area and our electric was between 70 and 90.

We had the ground floor of a house - 2 bedrooms, living room, seperate kitchen. Not teeny tiny but not huge. Our stove was gas but we also paid for that and it was miniscule. I also had 6 compact fluorescents and 2 fans running for 14 hours a day.

Heat is the biggie. We never paid for heat and I don't know what size apartments you're looking at so I don't know what to tell you about that.
