Question about unveiling

My mom passed away last March, and the unveiling will be this February. I was really close with my mom, and would like to take DD to the service, which is roughly 20-30 mins long. However, DH thinks it's inappropriate to bring a young child to a cemetery (she just turned 2 on 12/21).

It's a tough situation so I'm looking to hear what others think or if anyone has dealt with something similar. Thanks in advance.

Question about unveiling

I think that's entirely up to you. I'm pretty sure my baby niece was at my mothers unveiling years ago.

Re: Question about unveiling

DS was a baby for DH's grandmother's unveiling. It's different then a funeral. I think it's ok, but as PP said its up to you. DS slept through it and stayed in the car so one of the older kids there was by the car and watched him. You park right by the grave so we were really only a few feet away anyway.
Sorry about your mom.

Re: Question about unveiling

It is up to you. I am sorry for your loss. Fwiw, I went to the funeral home, but not the burial while pregnant for my grandmother. I also attended the luncheon after the rest of the family went to the cemetery. But did bring my then one year old to the cemetery for the unveiling a year later. In my family pregnant women are not supposed to go to a cemetery.

Question about unveiling

Ohhhhh I just remember. Dd was at my grandmothers unveiling when she was about 7 months. She slept in the car the whole time and we stood right outside.

Re: Question about unveiling

We brought our daughter to my grandma's unveiling when she was 2.5. My MIL kept an eye on her during the ceremony.

Re: Question about unveiling

So sorry for your loss.
I have never been to an unveiling, but DS comes with me whenever I go to the cemetery to see my
mom. IMO I think it's ok, children always bring some happiness to an otherwise sad situation so her being there will probably lift everyone's spirits in a way.

Question about unveiling

I think it depends on the child. If she can handle standing/sitting there while you mourn, then yes, I would bring her. If she's too active and doesn't take directions well, I'd probably leave her home.

Re: Question about unveiling

I'd bring her. An unveiling typically isn't even 20 minutes long, especially when it's this cold out! She can always sit in the car since it will be parked so close to the site.
