Question about stairs/childproofing

I'm just starting to c/p and have a question. We live in a ranch, but have a finished basement. There's a door to go down there that we'll be putting a handle lock on, but would/did you put a gate there as well (just in case a guest leaves the door open) or is that a bit much?

We didn't put a gate there but we did put a hook and eye lock on the top of the basement door. It kept them out even as they began reaching for the knob.
