Question about Polycystic Ovaries
I have been struggling with infertility for a while now and today I went to a new dr and they suggested that I have PCOS. I am 33 isn't that kind of late to be diagnosed with that?
Ladies who have how old were you when you were diagnosed with. Any other info you can share would be great. I am also diabetic.

Re: Question about Polycystic Ovaries
Is it possible that the previous doctor missed the diagnosis?
Im not sure about onset but I was diagnosed after going off BCP for 8 years and not getting AF for months. I was 30. I know that PCOS is also a hormonal imbalance which affects blood sugar, so maybe it has to do with your diabetes? Not sure.
eta did they do bloodwork or did they just see the cysts on the sono?
Hopefully they will get to the bottom of it! GL

Re: Question about Polycystic Ovaries
I never missed a period so i think that through everyone off. I was on the pilled for 12 yrs so that masked things I am sure. No cysts appeared. I am going to a new grouo of doctors so I guess I will take it from there. The endo said the diabetes could definately be related. He gave me metaforin.

Re: Question about Polycystic Ovaries
I don't have PCOS, but three of my friends that do weren't diagnosed until they had trouble conceiving. They didn't have many of the typical symptoms so it wasn't obvious. All three have children now (all needed Clomid, one needed IUI).

I too was not diagnosed until later on. I was on the pill for about 8 years, so always had a regular cycle. Once I got off the pill I noticed that my cycles were getting longer and longer. Also when they did US they did not find cysts in my ovaries, I just have this nagging one on my right ovary that we had removed 2x, but it came back. Not until blood work confirmed that my levels were off, not too high but high enough to diagnose PCOS.
I am not diabetic, but insulin resistant. I was put on Metformin, but it made me so sick that I could not take it.

Re: Question about Polycystic Ovaries
I was diagnosed at 26 during surgery for a cyst removal. I had been on BCP it was masking a lot of the symptoms. I have a lot of symptoms now and have been told I have "classic PCOS". Not IR though but I follow a pretty low GI diet.
Like PP said, PCOS is such a broad diagnosis. One RE told me it is often a diagnosis given if you meet at 2 or 3 of the criteria, of which there are MANY.

I was diagnosed at 28 when I was trying to get pregnant. My irregular periods as a teen were written off as being a teenager, and I was given BCP which I then was on for 10 years. When I was trying to TTC I went without a period for 6 months and the doctor I was with told me it was normal. I knew it couldn't be normal, so I found a new doctor who diagnosed me with PCOS and I was with an RE three months later.
ETA: My "official" diagnosis was made after bloodwork showed my LH:FSH ratio was totally off and I had a high level of testosterone.

Re: Question about Polycystic Ovaries
I was diagnosed at 24. I wasn't even trying to get pregnant but my doctor realized something was up when I didn't get my period for 3 months!

Re: Question about Polycystic Ovaries
It was suspected for me due to my history of irregular periods, but I wasn't officially diagnosed until 31, by Dr. B. My bloodwork isn't consistent with PCOS, but I do have the cysts in my ovaries and the irregular periods.

Re: Question about Polycystic Ovaries
I was diagnosed at 13. I thought the "prize" for that would be since I knew I'd have problems conceiving, I'd get pregnant sooner because I'd get help faster.
Umm.. no
