polycystic ovaries advice please

Hi ladies,

Just a little background information, went off BCP about 6 months ago once we decided we wanted to start trying. Over the past 6 months my cycles have ranged anywhere from 30-60 days with my most recent cycle being 36 days long. The one before that was 60 days!

I saw my GYN last week to discuss my concerns. I was sort of thinking she would make more of a big deal than she did but she didn't. She said my body is trying to figure out how to ovulate on it's own. She also said that I shouldn't stress b/c that could affect ovulation as well. Easier said than done...but I'm trying to stay positive and letting nature take it's course. She said if I wanted I could come back for a vaginal sonogram at the end of my cycle. She made everything up to me, it wasn't like she was like I want you to come in for it...So of course I went ahead and called this week once AF was ending for ths sono. My gyn saw me last night after the sono and she said my pictures looked "great" and doesn't see any problems, my uterus looked good. She said continuing using the CBEFM (this is my 2nd month usint it) and to call her if my cycles get back on the longer side. Just as I was about to get up and leave she said my ovaries look a "little" polycystic and goes well we already know that you aren't ovulating every month and that explains it. Why did she start off saying my pictures look great?!
She left off with saying to call her if my cycles continue on the long side and then we can discuss taking medication. she said with the medication comes the risk of having multiples...Does anyone have similar experience with this with their doctors? Should I get another opinion? Chat Icon

Definitely get a second opinion!

Not to worry you, but your story sounds similiar to mine. I went off BCP and didn't get AF for about 70 days. Went to my OBGYN who told me I had cysts on my ovaries and that I have polycystic ovarian syndrome. Told me to come back when I was ready to get PG and totally did not address the issue. My OBGYN sounds very similiar to yours - too relaxed about the situation!

Your condition might be nothing - BUT if it is something, you should get the proper testing done now so you know what you're in for. My advice, get a second opinion!

Good luck Chat Icon

Re: polycystic ovaries advice please

thanks! I was on BCP for 8 years. The thing that is bothering me is she is very laid back about it and didn't say I have PCOS. But in a way I guess she did if she said my ovaries look polycystic right? Do you think I should see another GYN or a RE?

Just because you have polycystic ovaries does NOT mean you have PCOS - so don't panic Chat Icon You could have polycystic ovaries without being classified with PCOS.
I, too, was on BCP for about 9-10 years. I listened to my body and just knew something wasn't right. My GYN was very laid back about it - so much so that I left his office crying because he was not understanding at all - even after giving me the PCOS diagnosis. If you can get an appointment with an RE, I'd go that route. They are much more thorough and will do a full work up.

Re: polycystic ovaries advice please

My advice is if your insurance does not require a referral to make an appointment with an RE. Many of us with PCOS wasted time with gynos who kind of blew it off. IF you want to get pregnant and your cycles are still so long after 6 months, an RE is your best option.

Re: polycystic ovaries advice please

wow, we seem to have had a similar experience, my obgyn said to come back in after a year and said nothing was wrong-she misdiagnosed me and didnt even look at my bloodwork which was off...
did you go to suffolk obgyn by chance?

Well, get a second opinion bc i have it and clomid has worked wonders at getting a fair shot and a normal cycle back..i have a few other issues too, endo, lost a tube last month but for the pcos go to a RE, i did and am soooo glad i did.

Dr. Flisser in Garden City is wonderful. RMANY.

Leave, leave, leave....she is way too nonchalant about PCOS.
You need to find a Dr. who is much more pro-active. Preferably an RE....an RE would be much more effective in helping you to conceive.

ITA- you may want to at least make a consult appt. w/ an RE- IMO Gyn's are not IF specialists and unfortunately prescribe meds without the proper back-ground (I speak from experience, as this happened to me)...Good Luck in whatever you decide Chat Icon

Re: polycystic ovaries advice please

My OBGYN was like that too, I went to her because my cycles were wacky since my m/c in July. They were ranging from 14 days to 54 days. She did some bloodwork. When she called with the results she left a message that everything was good, but to call back, when I did, she like, well you have PCOS so I am going to put you on clomid, like it was no big deal...She wasn't even overly concerned that my FSH level was extremely high!! Needless to say I am going to a specialist.

OMG you had a bad experience with Suffolk Ob/Gyn too? They didn't even do any blood work or sono on me, they told me that going over 60 days without a period was NORMAL!

Re: polycystic ovaries advice please

thanks for all your help ladies. I'm going to make an appt with an RE like you all suggested, it doesn't hurt to get a more thorough work up. She didn't do blood work at all or even suggest it! The funny thing is the sono tech said to me "oh your doctor can do blood work to see what is going on." I actually go to university plaza obgyn in garden city. I'm going to look into an RE in nassau county...I don't mind going to suffolk but I'll have to search around on the boards to see who everyone likes.
Thanks again, I really appreciate all your feedback!!

ITA with this. I recently found out that my GYN actually suspected PCOS when I was 20 years old and went almost a year without AF---she wrote it in my chart, BUT NEVER BOTHERED TO TELL ME!!!!!

Get yourself to a doctor that's going to act in your best interest. I'm so angry that I continued going to her for the next 7 years, not knowing that she was keeping something this huge from me. Chat Icon

Re: polycystic ovaries advice please

My girlfriend has PCOS - she goes to Dr. Nadel in Mineola for GYN/OB - people have varying degrees of PCOS, but most cases require attention. The fact that you are ovulating on your own is a good sign!
