Question about maternity leave & disability....

Does anyone know if you can sign up for disability at any time or if it has to be done during your companies open enrollment period? Let's just say that when I asked if pregnancy was covered under disability I was told it wasn't....open enrollment has passed and now I think I might have missed out. I know I can still get it from NYS, but if there was a way I could get additional it would be sooooooooooooooo helpful! Please share any info or experience you may have with this. Thanks so much!

I tried to sign up for short term disability with aflac at our open enrollment in November - but pregnancy is considered a pre-x and isn't covered within the first year on the plan so i didn't join. I was given the paperwork for FMLA which goes with the state disability - they does not have an open enrollment.

I love how they say pregnancy is a pre existing condition like its a disease or something!
