question about ipods...and songs

question...I do not have one...but I bought one for my dh for xmas the guy working there told me a story someone that downloaded free songs and got in trouble and was fined like 75,000.00 and some other girl got fined like 20,000.00 so..I am thinking..in all honesty if I did own one..I would never pay for a song..I just wouldn't so I don't have one..nor do I even have the patience to even learn how to use one..
so my poll is...
who actually pays for a darn song...and who just downloads for free>
I mean do people actually worry about downloading? who actually watches that anyhow?

edited to add a question but it won't workChat Icon

Big media companies watch Limewire and other peer to peer networks and contact ISP's, etc to stop illegal file sharing.

I voted Free. I don't have an Ipod but bought one for my boyfriend for Christmas. As of now he downloads all of his music from Limewire so I assume he'll do the same with the Ipod.

Re: question about ipods...and songs

So far, I mostly just uploaded songs from my Cds.

I have purchased a few songs & will probably continue to. I paid for Cds, why wouldn't I pay for MP3s?

Re: question about ipods...and songs

There was a short period when I was in college that I used P2P networks to download songs, but even then I was nervous and only downloaded maybe 20 songs. Now I always pay, not only because I know it's illegal but because those programs may also load spyware onto your computer. Nothing's for free.

like I said--I reallly do not even get it..I didn't know u can download a cd...
I assumed every sony had to be bought..I doidn't know every cd u already had could be downloaded..that is good to know.
I am sure there are people who do not pay like the people the guy at Apple was talking about..

we download all our music from itunes - but i am in the IP field and feel it is hypocritical to not abide by the copyright laws

but i do know someone who had to declare bankruptcy at 22 becuase the judgment agaist him was for over 200,000 -he had ons of music and created ways to search through it

Re: question about ipods...and songs

I buy songs on iTunes or (gasp) buy CDs and upload them. Sometimes I'll borrow CDs from friends and upload them, too, but I don't download for free and haven't done so in a long time. IMO, if a song is good enough that I want to listen to it and own it, it's worth the $0.99 to buy it.

I voted this too. We both download from limewire and import it into itunes to put on our ipod. We just don't share our files that we download.

i'm cueing deb here to pop on whenever she is ready

i use limewire and i fix it so that the files I have are not shared and get saved on a separate drive - I don't go crazy - I do it moderately so as not to get caught

Instead of buying a whole cd I just buy the songs I want for 99 cents. My DH never pays though. He uses limewire

I'm pretty sure that this is also considered illegal. I believe that buying the CD allows for one 'rip' to digital for the purchaser - no one else and only one copy, not to be shared.

Yup... and for those who don't think file sharing is monitored, as someone who works in the intellectual property world, I assure you it is. Every day people get caught and punished for it.

Re: question about ipods...and songs

I uploaded music from my cds and I buy additional songs I like from i-tunes. $0.99/song is pretty minimal compared to the cost of an entire cd.

I'm not sure how the shared sites work but, someone told me not to do it because the files aren't necessarily safe (as well as the legality issue).

not limewire but other private p2p. It is usually just live DJ sets that are shared, like bootlegs.

We use I-Tunes and some of the cd's we get, or the emails from I-Tunes gives us free music downloads, so we take advantage of them.

Gotta love those I-Tunes gift cards!

Downloading is illegal as well. And you can still get caught for downloading. You're just making it less likely you'd get caught. Chat Icon

oh i know that

anything can happen

i don't do it that much that it's noticeable

if i have 30 songs at a time, it's alot.

and if it happens, i'll deal...
