Question about interviewing a pediatrician
My DH and I have interviewed quite a few. We actually interviewed one today who before even seeing us asked for our insurance card. My DH wanted to know why they wanted our insurance information in walks the doctor who had an attitude from the start and says, "Well if I am going to spend 10-15 of my time with you I would like to get paid for it". We thought this was a little rude being we were there to interview for the purpose of using her as our DD's doctor and your going to charge us to take 10 minutes of your time???
Like I said, we have interviewed quite a few who never asked for any of our information let a lone charge us for anything and even though she is not charging us personally, she is still charging our insurance company.
I was wondering how many of you who interviewed pediatricians had their insurance companies billed by the doctor for a consultation?

Re: Question about interviewing a pediatrician
That would be the one pediatrician that I would just scratch off of my list. The consultations should be free! and he should be trying to win you over, not act like a jerk!

My thoughts exactly! She had an attitude from the moment she walked in the room as if she was doing us a favor!
My DH and I had our mind set from that moment, she was so off the list.

Re: Question about interviewing a pediatrician
Once she said that, I would have said, "I wouldn't trust you as my childs doctor with that attitude." And left without giving my insurance informaiton.
How rude!

Re: Question about interviewing a pediatrician
your insurance will most likely NOT pay for that--you will have to.
my mother, before she was laid off, paid medical claims for 15 years. she told me they would never pay for those--and she warned me to not let them have my insurance info because i would be responsible for the bill.
so even though you gave your card, it will probably be denied.

Re: Question about interviewing a pediatrician
I hope you won't have to pay for that visit - a consultation should be FREE!
I called over to a pediatrician's office that was recommended to me by a friend and that Dr wanted to charge us $70 just to interview him!! THE NERVE! I said, ok thank you and hung up. I couldn't believe he actually charged a fee to meet with him.

Re: Question about interviewing a pediatrician
That is so rude! I understand the charge. My pediatrician had a $30 consultation fee that some insurances cover but mine did not. But, they put it nicely and I understood.
ETA: they spent 30-45 minutes with me and I also got to speak with the lactation consultant. so it was well worth the $30.

Re: Question about interviewing a pediatrician
Instead of leaving you should have refused to give her the card and then stayed and asked her questions for like a hour! (I of course would never have the guts to do it, but it sounds great!)
I'm so sorry you had such a crappy experience.

Re: Question about interviewing a pediatrician
Some insurances will pay for that - I had to meet with a ped surgeon for a consultation before DD was born regarding a possible surgery she might need at birth and I know mine paid for it - I understand why some do this since they are losing out on seeing patients and some do spend a while speaking with you- but I went with a ped who meet with us for about 20 mins and didn't charge. They should have informed you there would be a consultation fee before you went for the appt.
