question about inductions (sorry a little long)

So I am trying to figure out if I should get induced or not. .

I just got back from the doc and I am not at all dilated and not at all effaced. My cervix is still so high my dr had trouble reaching it.

Her thought is she wants to induce me at some point this week anyway just bc she's worried I'm a little more high risk bc of my age and such. .

My concern is that with my body soooo not being mildly ready that it will just end up in a very long and painful labor and possible a c-section anwyay. . so I'm trying to figure out what I should do. . she did say that she would wait if I wanted to but I'm just torn. . I really just want to do what's best for my LO but am terrified of being in labor for days especially since DH has so little time off and I don't want it to be with him in the hospital with me for three days in labor and get no time at home. .

ugh. . I feel like I am just whining and venting but this is so hard. . I just wish my body was showing ANY signs of progress. .

Re: question about inductions (sorry a little long)

I'm so sorry you are feeling anxiety over this.
How late are you/when is your due date?
Personally, I would wait a few more days if the dr feels its safe to. But if/when dr suggests induction should be done now, I would do it then. I was induced when DS was 9 days late, and like you, my body was doing NOTHING to show me that this child had any plans on making an exit any time soon. They began cervidil on Weds evening, pitocin Thursday morning, did another cervidil thursday evening, pitocin again friday morning, and i was dilated just enough friday at 11am for the dr to break my water. I delivered DS vaginally at 7pm Friday night.
I did contract all day Thursday, but it was nothing crazy. I wouldn't consider my labor starting with the crazy contractions until after the dr broke my water. It was a long couple of days, but totally tolerable... and hey, couldn't have been that bad if i'm doing it again!
In the end, you need to trust your gut and your dr. I know you are nervous and want to do what's best.

Re: question about inductions (sorry a little long)

thanks for your story whitney. . that sounds long but manageable. I am only 4 days late now but the Dr. is worried about letting me go longer bc I'm on old lady Chat Icon She thinks Thursday night is as late as she wants to go which will still only be a week overdue but I guess I just have to trust her. . I just had my heart so set on not being induced but I guess in the end it's just important to have a healthy Chat Icon and not how he gets here. .

What does age have to do with anything?!?!

I'd wait another week if I were you. Then get induced at 41.5 weeks if you didn't go into labor yet.

Re: question about inductions (sorry a little long)

I probably don't have the most promising story, but I'll share my experience anyway.

I was put on bedrest with DS at 32 weeks because of high blood pressure.

By 37 weeks I was 1cm dilated and my OB scheduled my induction for the following week.

I went into labor the day before my induction. But my labor was slow and started with my water breaking. My contractions were inconsistent so they gave me pitocin to move it along.

I got all the way to 10cm! Took me to get to 10cm after about 10 hours, epidural free.

I pushed for 3 hours. And did ultimately wind up with a c-section. But it had nothing to do with a failed induction. It was because DS was 9lbs 3 oz and during labor rotated to a sunny side up position. My OB was afraid since he was the wrong way once I got his head out his shoulders would get stuck. So we did the c-section.

So, with all that said, I just wanted to show that not all inductions are terrible. The induction part worked for me, my DS was just a PITA Chat Icon

One more thing....has your doctor mentioned anything about stripping your membranes? I've heard it can be painful, but also kick start labor. My sister had it done when she was late with her 3rd.

Re: question about inductions (sorry a little long)

I have a friend that was induced after one week, she was 40. Her doctor induces everyone after a week. It ended in a csection, but she was very happy about that. I would wait a few more days.

Re: question about inductions (sorry a little long)

I was induced with my DD and had a great delivery 12 hours fron the start of cervadil to DD beung delivered. I had this covo with my doc last visit because I want her to be the one to deliver and not her partner, she said as long as I showed some progress she would induce but w/o progress you could wind up needing a c- section. I would wait another week if LO and yourself is in no distress or danger I dont see the harm in waiting for some sort of progress. Good Luck hopefully your body will respond good to the induction like mine did!!!Chat IconChat Icon
