Question about HSG
Did your Dr. tell you to stop TTC for that month? My OB/GYN told me no unprotected sex the month of the HSG bc of the dye. But I really don't want to lose another month of trying.
What do you girls think?
TIA

Re: Question about HSG
I thought it was just no unprotected sex from the start of AF until the test....I thought they just wanted to ensure you were not pregnant when they did the test. But i am not sure! good luck!

That's exactly what it is. But you can still TTC the day after the test, you still have plenty of time before ovulation Good Luck!

This is what I was told as well. You can still after the test. Good luck!

Re: Question about HSG
That's what I thought but my Dr for some reason didn't want us after either just to be safe bc their could still be some dye in my uterus.

This is what the person that booked my HSG appointment said too. You can still after the test because that is when you will be ovulating. The HSG is done within the first 10 days of your cycle.

Yes, I was told no unprotected sex before the test to guarantee that you are not pregnant, some will even have you take a pregnancy test. After the HSG, they say you have an increased chance of conceiving b/c everything is "cleaned out" and if there is any kind of blockage, sometimes if clears it.

Re: Question about HSG

Re: Question about HSG
Are there any after effects I should be aware of? (Ie, bleeding, cramping etc).

It depends on the individual.
During the procedure (which takes literally 5 mins) I had some mild cramping. Then I had some bleeding after but only when I wiped. Otherwise, I felt fine.
Then about three hours after the procedure I had incredible cramping and belly pain. To the point I could not stand up straight to walk. I left work and went home and passed out. I woke up a few hours later and had a fever. I took some Ibprofin and fell back asleep for an hour. I checked my temp again and the fever had gone down.
I looked up these symptoms on WebMd and it said if you are experiencing extreme cramping, belly pain and a fever to call your doctor. I had all three...so I called my doctor but the service never gave him the message. I woke up the next day feeling a million times better. I still had some cramping but it was more discomfort than anything else. I called the doctor and told him what happened. He said that since I am fine now it is not an infection but I probably had a reaction to the dye that was injected.
My advice to you is to take some tylenol, advil or something before the procedure and if at all possible do not go to work that day just in case you have the same reaction that I did.

Thanks. I actually have a prescription for an antibiotic of some sort he wants me to take 2 days before and then for another 3 days. The problem is that he said to stay out of the sun while on the meds bc you can get a rash .
I planned on doing the HSG next Thursday night after work hopefully, as long as AF has left by then (AF due this Sat or Sun). My problem is that I am going away on Friday through Sunday. I'm afraid if I wait until I get back to do the test, it will be too close to when I O, which is usually CD 12. But at the same time, I don't want to be in a lot of pain while I am away for the weekend.

Re: Question about HSG
How painful really seems to vary from person to person. I was expecting the worst b/c I heard it was painful and it doesn't sound so nice- the test was over so quickly and I barely felt a thing. I had some cramping later on, but no worse than AF cramps. I think if there is an obstruction it may be a little more uncomfortable and I think it depends alot on who is doing the test. Worst case, you'll have some bad cramping and a little bleeding afterwards - just rest and you should be good to go the next day! The antibiotics will take care of any infection from occuring. Like a PP said, take some tylenol before hand to ease the pain (just like you should when you get a brazilian bikini wax!)
