Question about handling/storing breastmilk
I'm currently away at a conference. I've been away 3 days, and am heading home today. I pumped while I was here and stored my milk in the freezer compartment of our hotel room fridge. I have about a 2 and a half hour drive home today. I'm expecting the milk to start to defrost in the car, but I'm sure it won't fully defrost by the time I'm home. What would be the best thing to do with it when I get home? Put it in the freezer and refreeze what ever defrosted? Put it in the fridge (but then I should use it up within a day, right?)? Thoughts? TIA!

Once it starts defrosting, you absolutely should not put it back in the freezer! You have to transfer it to the fridge and then use within 24 hrs of it being thawed... Check out kellymom for all the info! http://www.kellymom.com/store/freehandouts/milkstorage01.pdf

You can freeze it again as long as there are still ice crystals in there. When we lost power during Hurricane Sandy, I had researched this issue and asked some people very knowledgeable about BFing because I was worried about my milk. This article talks about how milk is still considered frozen as long as there is still some ice in there.

Exactly this! Ice crystals means it can be refrozen (did this during Irene and all was fine)

Thank you for this! That was kind of my line of thinking. I know there will still be a decent sized chunk of frozen milk in each bag when I get home, which obviously means the small portion that will get defrosted en route will still be colder than if it were not with the frozen portion. Thanks again!

When we lost electric I refroze all the milk that hadn't completely defrosted (still had a good size ice chunk). We have since used all of that milk with no issues whatsoever (did the sniff test lol and defrosted it/used it w/in the same day)
