Question about fevers and going out HELP

background:
10pm last night Liam had 102.9 fever. Called his pedi, he said give him tylenol and just monitor him and bring him in today. OK, at 11:30 fever was down to I think 100.1 or maybe it was 99.something. He was fine at daycare (they are very good about knowing if there's a fever or not) but he did sleep alot there, more than normally so.

So at 1:30am I took temp again, it was 103.5! So off we go to the ER, because I'm a bit nervous now about the temp. So it went down to 103 in triage, then they gave him Tylenol at 2:30 and it went down to about 101 and then they gave him Motrin about 4am and it broke the fever and at 5am he was normal temp.

So brought him home, it has been fluctuating all day - in the 99 range to 100.4. Oh, he had a chest x-ray (I asked for one, the ER dr didn't think he had pneumonia but I said he sounded congested the day before and I just felt better if one was done) and it came up clear. But the ER dr gave us Rx for Xithromax anyway to be on the safe side. Ears and throat were fine.

I called pedi and talked to his nurse today at 9am. She said no need to come in since what the ER did is what they would do too with giving Xithromax and alternating Tylenol and Motrin. If the fever persists on Monday to bring him in.

So my question is this: we were supposed to go play poker at a friend's house tonight. We were going to bring Liam, have him sleep in the spare room in his carrier and bring our monitor w/ us. He is a pretty good sleeper. But now I don't kow what to do. I don't think the fever is contagious, but should I bring him out? We're not going far, it's cold but I always heat up my car first. We would probably go at 7pm and leave at 12am.

Does anyone think we should not go? Liam's last temp was taken 1 hour ago and it was 100.4 so I gave Tylenol.
WWYD?

ETA: AS MUch as i would like to see my friends as I've missed every poker night since September, I don't want to make Liam sicker. But is a fever indicative of something where i should keep him home?? I don't think he's contageous or anything but maybe i am wrong?

Did they take blood?

I would go but that's me. Esp if there is a place for him to sleep. I did it when Andrew was sick. SIl has a place for him to sleep so I wasn't worried.

I hope he feels betterChat Icon

Re: Question about fevers and going out HELP

I would stay home, not because I thought he would get sicker but because I would want him to be confortable in his own bed and I would want to be home with all our stuff around in case the fever comes back.

babies get high fevers and its probably just a virus.

I would absolutely stay home with him. The best medicine is TLC.

No blood taken!

I think we're going to go for 2 hrs only now.

He loves sleeping in his carseat, but we'll also bring his stroller so he can lay out in it - he's done that a few times. With a video monitor on him I think we'll be ok for a few hours. I just feel like I never get to see these friends, they are DH's friends who he's known for years as they grew up in Ireland together and they live closeby us now. He made a comment (the friend) at the baptism, I think it was tongue in cheek but still, that DH is "whipped by the Yank" and that he hasn't seen him since Liam was born. That's not my fault, DH was ready to go down to LI this weekend instead b/c I originally was going to go to a bridal shower today and he figured it was easier for me not to drive all the way there, all the way home and then to poker, but I said no, I don't need your friends thinking I'm keeping you away from them now!

But I'll take his temp now and decide for definite what we'll do. If it's over 100.4 we'll stay home.

We also just called them and suggested they come here but they just got home from Ireland today so I don't think they want to drive anywhere.
It will probably be an early night b/c of that too.

can't you send DH with out you? It really sounds like your baby is sick. He needs his rest and TLC.

Re: Question about fevers and going out HELP

With high fevers like he has been having he is obviously sick, and I know when Im sick- I like to be home, resting, in my bed...

I would never take my baby to someone elses house when he was ill- His resistance is low, and I wouldnt want him to catch anything, PLUS I would want to keep him as comfy as possible!

My DR alwyas says fever free for 24 hrs before going out- like I said before- his resistance is low- he is at greater risk than usual to catch something....

Its freezing out tonight- Im sorry- but I think taking him out would be a little selfish...

I think the last thing your son needs is a secondary infection to fight off. His little body has raised its internal temp to 103 to kill off the infection. Bringing him out in the cold & out in general wouldn't be an option for me.

Also keep in mind that fevers come & go. Joseph had nightime fevers of 101, 104, 102, 103 all week long. During the day he was hovering as low as 100.
Good luck whatever you decide.

Re: Question about fevers and going out HELP

Plus think of it this way, if a fever worries you so much that you took him to the ER, how would you even enjoy your poker night with him? you would be soo worried no?

I dotn think its worth it.
