question about doctors & hospitals

i've just been thinking about my situation. Right now there's one doctor that I really like a lot and I would LOVE to continue going to her when I'm pregnant and all throughout that process. In fact, it would be awesome if she could deliver the baby as well. Only problem is that she's about an hour drive from where I'm living. That's no problem for me when it comes to appointments. But I just can't see me ever willing to risk being THAT far when the big day comes (obviously). I mean, my water breaks there's no way i'm gonna be like "I hope I don't give birth in the car during our hour drive to the hospital!" Chat Icon

I'm going to ask her about it next time I see her, but that's not for another 2 months - so I'm asking here. Is it ever somewhat normal to see one doctor consistently, but have another actually DELIVER the baby? I'd like to go to her throughout the 9 months, but give birth at a hospital much much closer. Is that normal do you think? Or completely out of the question.

Re: question about doctors & hospitals

For me personally i would want to get to know my doctor that is delivering. Although, you truly never know what doctor is on call and will deliver. When my son was born, if he came one day earlier I would of had a different doctor, one from the same practice that I did see a couple times, but not my favorite one.

While, there is a chance that you wouldn't know the delivering doctor when you go into labor, I still think it would be better to go to the same practice that will likely be delivering the baby.

Re: question about doctors & hospitals

My obgyn is a solo practioner, but he has other doctors cover for him. When I delivered DS I had to have an emergency c/s. I called the office a few minutes after 5 pm and well, did not get my obgyn so I had someone else deliver DS. In the moment it was a little annoying but frankly, it was perfectly fine. You really only see the doctor for a little while and the nurses are the ones who do most of the prep work.

I agree. The chances are slim and I've actually experienced a total stranger delivering my baby, but those cases aren't common...just the ones the media hypes up.
