Question about blood pressure

I posted yesterday that my OB thinks I might be showing early signs of preeclampsia. My blood pressure is usually about 100 or 110 over 70-80. For the past two days, it's been about 120/80. What does it mean when the top number increases? The bottom has been pretty consistent. I really don't understand how to interpret blood pressure.

TIA

Re: Question about blood pressure

the bottom # is the one they really are concerned with. However if there is a sudden jump in either # then they usuallly like to see if there is a reason. Mine is typically 130/80 while pregnant. My dr started to question it when it was 140/85.
You can buy a blood pressure cuff in cvs to keep track of it at home....i know you previously said you are teaching still. If you are comfortable enough you could always ask the school nurse to check you periodically.

Re: Question about blood pressure

120/80 is normal, Im not quite sure why the Dr would be very alarmed by this number even if you were always lower.

I agree - that is within normal range and regardless it is only a jump of about 10. The top number (systolic) is the number most affected by emotional state, nerves etc.

My Dr.'s became concerned when I started hitting about 140/80-90. In the worst stages of my pre-eclampsia I hit 220/110 Chat Icon

Re: Question about blood pressure

The doctor is more concerned with other signs I am showing of early preeclampsia. I know the 120 isn't high, but being that I've never had 120 before, I just figured I'd ask. Thanks girls Chat Icon

Actually any rise that is sustained could indicate preeclampsia. How far along are you? I had suspected preeclampsia for 5 weeks or so before I was given an emergency C-section
