Question about an HSG?

12 years ago I had ovarian cysts removed. DH and I have been TTC for about 6 moths with no luck. I am going to talk to my doctor about having an HSG b/c I am convinced that I may have blockages cause by scar tissue from my surgery. If there are blockages, what do they usually do about them?

2 of my coworkers who were TTC for 7-12 months had an HSG and both got pregnant the first month after. They swear by this exam and are telling me to be adamant with my doctor about sending me for one even though we haven't been TTC for a year (Im 30).

Re: Question about an HSG?

If you think you have a blockage you should ask you doctor about going for one.

I had one and it didn't help me get pregnant unfortunetely

Sometimes people have some minor blockages and this helps to kind of clean out their tubes and sometimes that leads to pregnancy.

Re: Question about an HSG?

Im in the same boat as you..going on 30 this month and TTC for almost a year.

Im scheduled for an HSG on day 9 of my cycle after AF comes this month.

I did have an issue years ago with a minor cyst. thats why i started BC pills. The dr. said that often times if there isnt a blockage the HSG test will "clear the pipes" and pregnanices happen a lot after its done.

My dr. also said if cysts are the issue I would have to go back on BC for like 2 months to knock them out, but im not sure about that. My cycles are just now getting regular are coming off the pill last Feb.

I would ask your doctor to refer you for an HSG if you are concerned about possible blockages. I know it doesn't happen for everyone, but I got pg two days after my HSG!

Re: Question about an HSG?

I just had one this week. It can't hurt to have one. My dr. did not think I needed one either, but I insisted. Sure enough, I am blocked....having a recantilization in a few weeks to clear them out.....if your tubes are blocked for reasons other than infection, it is a relatively simple thing to fix.
Why not?

I'd definitely speak to your doctor about it. I didn't get pregnant after mine, but some people do.

Re: Question about an HSG?

I don't think it hurts anything to perform the HSG, it's a bit uncomfortable (really, just a bit); I think of it as a proactive part of the path to pregnancy; Ruling something out or addressing an issue that needs to be corrected! Check with your Doc, there may be reasons to not do it, but you don't know 'til you ask!
Good Luck!
