Question about allergy medication and kids having side effects?
My son's allergies are awful!! He is congested, dry cough, runny nose and the worst part is his eyes. If he spends alot of time outside, his eyes are so puffy and red by night time. Sometimes he wakes up and his eyes are so swollen he can hardly open them. He is on Claritin, Pataday eye drops, and Nasonex.
Since he has been on the medication, he has been awful. Acting up, severe meltdowns, just so defiant. I know he is so uncomfortable. All he does is rub his eyes. He has always been a pretty difficult child, but the behavior is out of control. I'm wondering if its the medication.
I went to Peditrican the first time around, and now I have an appointment with Allergist this week. I just wanted to see if anyone else had this problem.

You can try a different med. Zyrtec may work better

Maybe it is not working the medicine and he is so uncomfortable he is irratible. My ds has horrible allergies this year and the claritan has helped the itchy eyes but his nose is runnier and his temperment has been better on the medicine. He was miserable before the claritan.

DS was awful with allergies. Nothing seemed to work. Went to an allergist and he prescribed something that helps sooo much and mood is fine as well. He takes that along with nasonex. Never thought he'd be fine bc he really was a mess. Go see an allergist. If its season the good news is its almost over.

Re: Question about allergy medication and kids having side effects?
I agree to try another OTC. I give her Claritin once a day and then Dye-free Benedryl at night if she needs it until her next dose in the morning.
Zyrtec makes my kid whacko! I mean, who is this child kind of whacko. cranky and mean. Still sort of suffering but just .. well 'ugly'
Allegra actually made her allergies WORSE! She wasn’t running by the nose but her eyes were red and she was cranky.
I suffer from allergies myself. Different meds DO act differently.
Ironically, I let her go without once in a blue moon if I can get away with it and she’s like hyper nation. Its like whatever is in her allergy meds keep her just below the level of insane child. Without any meds she’s quite literally jumping off the couch and running around waving her hands and wiggling her butt at the same time while blurting out giggly nonsense.
Its like who are you?
But I don’t mind so much. I will take that over her reaction on Zyrtec any day. A fun loving, hyper active kid is much welcome over a cranky, hateful, mean suffering child.
But each kid is different and goes through some changes too. Because now she can take Zyrtec on rare occasions if I have nothing else and not flip out.. but will still go whacko if its routine.
