Q about EBF 2.5 mo old baby's stool - mucus
Not sure if this is something to be concerned about or not but, I have never seen it before so that is why I am posting. The past two dirty diapers my DD had there were some small amounts of mucus in it. Is this something to be concerned about?
Also, while I have your attention on the subject DD has been having quite a few greenish/brownish dirty diapers - occasionally even bright green - I know I read on here this could mean she is not getting enough of hindmilk but, she does nurse often for a LONG time so I'm not sure that is it. I mentioned it to the ped at her 2 mo visit that it was happening once in a while and he said that was normal - something about the metabolism slowing down and going less frequently but, now it is happening a lot more - not sure if it is a cause for concern.
TIA so much!

For my DS the mucous was a sign of a milk protein allergy.

Was it all the time or just once in a while? Did it just appear all of a sudden? She is 2.5 mos old, EBF and this has never happened b/f - could it just have developed at this point?

For my DS, the mucous started happening one in a while when he was about a month old and then more frequently, until it was in almost every diaper. Does your DD show any other symptoms?

Re: Q about EBF 2.5 mo old baby's stool - mucus
For my DS the mucous was a sign of a milk protein allergy. So far, this is true for me too. I changed to a dairy free diet 2 weeks ago, my son is 4 months today. He had a few mucousy stools (3-4 over a couple weeks), lots of green poop(which I attributed, and still do, to too much foremilk when he does his snacking- 5 minutes or so of eating), and then there was small flecks of blood in his stool. Not all of them had blood, only about 6-8 over a 2 week period. It was enough to concern me. After speaking to my LC and going to a Ped GI, they both confirmed that it is most likely dairy protein intolerance. which is the 2nd most common cause of blood. The GI tested his diaper and I could have sworn that there was no blood...it was a beautiful, perfect yellow poop...but, it was positive for blood. : ( We're testing his diaper again next week, and if there's still blood (visible or occult), then I have to eliminate soy too. Soy and Dairy share 65% of the protein compositions, so there's a high probability that I'm also dealing with a soy sensitivity. 50% of infants have difficulties metabolizing dairy protein (bovine, sheep & goat). Grrrrr....I miss my cheese! But, DS now seems more content and less irritable. Good Luck to you. Maybe it was just viral and you don't have to cut out dairy. I'll keep my eyes open for an update.

My DS's other symptoms were reflux and uncomfortable gas. I started noticing that his symptoms were worse after I ate dairy products. He also started having tiny blood specks in his poop. They were so small I would have never noticed them if I weren't looking.

Re: Q about EBF 2.5 mo old baby's stool - mucus
Thanks so much ladies. I haven't really been eating any more dairy than usual lately and I don't really eat a ton of it in general. Also, she has no other symptoms really. She is a pretty happy baby - rarely fussy unless she is tired or hungry and doesn't ever get fussy after eating. She spits up sometimes but, almost always it is after one of the first two feedings of the day when she is guzzling and my milk is coming fast. She did once have a speck of bright red blood in her poop (although I also had a cut on my hand so I was never sure it was from her) but it was after a poop explosion and the ped said if it was hers it was probably from a fissure.
Is there anything else it could be?
If this persists through tom. I will def. call the ped. Thanks so much!

Were there any other symptoms? Was the mucus persisitent or just once in a while?
