pumping ques..

DD is one week old & I have been pumping during the day & formula feeding at night.

I have been making about 3-3.5 oz a bottle with every pump. My right breast seems to be producting more than my left. I use a warm compress to massage the area but I still feel like I am not producting enough milk.

How much milk should I be producing with every pump and is this normal?

any advice?

That's pretty good for one week old. As for once breast producing more that is normal once side just has more glandular tissue than the other. Make sure to pump for 15 mins but once you have a spray pump 5 mins after the spray is done.

It's perfectly normal for one side to produce more then the other. As long as you aren't in pain then I wouldnt be concerned at all. And that many ounces at only a week old is very good! I EP so I know how hard it can be but keep up the good work!

THe LC's at the hospital told me to pump every 3 hours to get my supply in. I did that for months.

There are many things you can do to build up a supply. I would start with pumping more. I was told not to do anything else to try and build my supply until 12 weeks. That is when your supply is established. After that you can play with it.

But it really all depends on what your plans are. Do you want to be making more milk? Do you want your LO to have more breast milk? Do you want your supply to change with their needs?

At 5 weeks I am only making 3-4 oz per bottle! So I say you are doing good. I also drink mothers milk tea and take the fenugreek vitamins. I probably should be pumping every 3 hours..but that never seems to happen and I think that is a big reason why my supply is not way up by now. I end up only pumping 4-5 times a day.

Thats a great amount for a one week old (congratulations!)

Totally normal for one to produce more than the other. If youre looking to produce more, pump more.

Are you exclusively pumping or breastfeeding her? If youre just pumping, pump after every time you feed her so your body can adjust to how much she needs to eat.

If you can, wake in the middle of the night and pump too. id get the most during night sessions (when DD would be sleeping) and in the a.m. when I first wake up.

Sounds like you're doing great so far!

At that point I pumped about 8 times a day until she was about 8 weeks old and I went back to work. I was getting over 30 oz. a day. At that point I was able to adjust my pumping schedule. In the beginning you have to pump often to help establish your supply.
