Re: Publishers clearing house
A close friend of mine actually works for PCH. He just came back from New Orleans presenting two checks there. He didn't tell me how they pick the winners, but they actually DO give out the money.

I used to work there. This was how it was done when I was there (late 90's) and I'm sure it hasn't changed much.
The winning number (and a bunch of backup winning numbers) is randomly generated by computer algorithm. That terminal is locked away and nobody knows what the winning number is to check against the customer file until after the contest ends.
If the winner didn't send back in their entry they move down to the next randomly generated number until they have a match. Then they don't even tell the employees who the winner is or where the Prize Patrol is traveling to award the prize.
A few months after awarding the big prizes they used to bring the winners in to meet the staff at a pep rally type thing. It was fun. It was a great company to work for, I learned so much there.
ETA: I almost forgot, almost all of the million dollar plus winners had sent in a non-order entry. You really can win without ordering.

Now you can enter online too, so you don't need to lick all those stamps and get cottonmouth.

Re: Publishers clearing house
I vaguely remember seeing a special on tv aboit PCH many years ago. I kinda remember them saying that they actually go to the neighborhood of the winner and pretty much stalk the house to see their comings and goings to make sure the winner is home when they ring the bell. It made me enter everytime after I saw that and was convinced it is real! Anyone see this or am I crazy?

Re: Publishers clearing house
PCH is actually a client of mine (for about one more week) and yes, its for real.... unfortunately, since I've done work for them I am not eligible to win!

Yes, you are correct. There is lots of prepwork to get that moment of opening the door and giving the person the check. People don't stay home like they used to 30 years ago.
