Property Tax Increases?

How often do property taxes increase in general in Nassau area - specifically around Floral Park? Does it depend, or is there a % per year that normally takes place.

Also, doing renovations on the inside of the house without any expansions - would this increase property tax as well?

TIA!

Property Tax Increases?

Once a year and no inside work does not increase taxes.

In Nassau County, you will notice a change in your taxes twice a year. Once on the General Tax bill (issued on or about January 1) and once on the School Tax Bill (issued on or about October 1). If you are in an incorporated village, you will notice a change when those tax bills are issued as well. In the Village of Floral Park tax bills are issued on or about June 1.

Tax rates generally do go up each year. There is no strict % increase though. We usually estimate between 3-5% for our clients.

As far as "inside" work increasing your taxes, the general rule is that if it's something you need a c/o for, there will be a tax increase. So if you're adding a bathroom or converting a half bath to a full bath, you'll face an assessment increase. If you're knocking down a wall to join 2 rooms or redoing a kitchen, you won't. If you're adding LIVABLE square footage, you are subject to an increase (i.e., finsihing a basement, etc.)

Also depends on the school budget increase that was passed each year... before the tax cap this year, last year the SD i live in had a 8% increase Chat Icon my taxes went up A LOT unfortunately. You can try to grieve them each year though by trying to reduce your assessment.
