I think it's an interesting way to raise capital while not raising broad based taxes - like income tax. I much rather pay a 'soda' tax which I can control by not drinking soda, then pay a higher income tax.

Yes but the soda thing is a joke -but how about the taxes they want to put back on clothing, gas, cable services, movie tickets etc were listed.

I agree with this...all the items being taxed are "luxury" items and not necessities...I prefer that over having my income or real estate taxes going up.
You can elect not to buy or do the things being taxed, but if you are financially struggling, higher income or RE tax might put you over the edge.

Its totally ridiculous. All these new fees and taxes yet they're only laying off 521 state workers? Give me a break. (Not that its ok for ANYONE to lose their job but SERIOUSLY, in a state government this large -- you KNOW there's 'dead wood' there -- and that's the best you can do?)
I'm not even opposed to the "vice taxes" per se -- alcohol, cigarettes, non diet soda, etc. But clothing??? Music downloads???
How about a DRUNK DRIVING tax??? YOu drink and drive, the state gets your car if it has a decent resale value or you pay a MINIMUM $5K fee if its a crappy car, end of story. They could generate revenue AND provide a really meaningful disincentive at the same time as you're saving thousands of lives.

With the ripple effects of Wall Street that NYS is feeling, the economy, unemployment, increasing foreclosures and home prices down - what others ways are there to raise capital unless you raise broad based taxes? NYS makes money thru taxes. The same thing is going to happen in federal taxes too. I do think that there is probably a lot of fat that can be cut that isn't being cut but that is bureaucracy at it's best.

As far as laying off state workers - how do they really choose who stays and who goes. It's almost impossible to get laid off from a civil service job. And, there are not that many STATE jobs...most are either county or city.
As far as the Drunk Driving idea - it's a good idea, but it would cost far more to enforce it than they would ever get back. They had tried it in Nassau and it just doesn't work as well as you would think.

Layoffs just increase unemployment numbers and, in the long run, may not aid in closing the deficit all that much. The state would have to pay severvence and unemployment benefits.
As far as drunk drivers and fees...great in theory but it may be more expensive in the implementation then the benefit.
