Professionalism
Do you think its more professional if you let things go that people say when they are tring to be blunt or fight the issues in meetings? Ive been noticing in meetings lately various people fighting and arguing issues and it looks like they are crazy. They also tend to start a reputation for themselves that if they relaxed a little they might not have. Me personally, I let it go because I think it seems more professional to let things roll off my back. But I also watch shows like thae apprentice where fighting with one another helped in certain aspects.

I work with some people who just like to argue and complain and they do it just for the sake of doing it. In that case, I see no need to try and counter because they are too stubborn to listen and refuse to see the gray in any issue. I have specific people in mind from my job, I am not generalizing. But there are also people with whom I can have a professional debate because they consider all sides. Since I aspire to be more like that myself, those are the types of people I would talk with, if I had an issue or there was something I thought differently about.

The issue is if you never speak up, in my company, it's assumed that you agree with whatever is proposed. If I feel strongly enough about an issue, I let my boss know during the meeting (usually silently). Usually if it's something that I feel is getting to the point of being unprofessional, I very loudly propose to "Take this offline".

Keep in mind this was a "job interview" as fake as it was....and that if you were looking for a position where you needed to have someone "sell themselves", you want confident, agressive people. Keeping difficult people around for the interview helps to weed out the people that can't manage others well. Also, because it's a ratings driven show, the crazy/difficult people were kept around,

Thats so true! you are right...those people that were the "crazys" like I have described were eventually gone. They stayed to raise the ratings bc like you said its TV.

I also thought about how you mentioned those "gray" areas. I have a tendancy to look at all points of view and figure out what I am going to do. This is probably why it bothers me so much to see people that are black and white thinkers because they seem so demanding without even caring to listen or understand. I also prefer not to hang with this type of person but when I am in meetings I bite my tongue.

I think speaking your mind and making helpful suggestions for improvements is professional (as long as it is not constantly).
Complaining about something and offering no solutions is unprofessional. Also when you blame problems on everyone but take no responsibility for anything- that is also very unprofessional.

IMO being blunt and fighting are completely different things
saying what you want to say, well you can do that without yelling or fighting. especially in the workforce

Its funny bc just yesterday we were sitting in another meeting and one of the psychologist like a lil' baby gets up and says "Im overwhelmed by the switching of the rooms, now I have 7 more and the other therapists have 7 less...thats not fair". No joke...we were all like..so give it to us. I mean really stop complaining all the time. Especially to directors. Good Lord...we can work together. I am the youngest. These guys are like 37-50.
