Preschool- POLL

I just signed DD up for a 3's program for next fall-- she will be 3 next December-- but now I am having second thoughts about having her start "school" so early.

Because of the cutoff in our district she will have to do 3 years of preschool if she starts next year bc she will not be of age for kindergarten after 2 years. So she will be doing a 3, 4 and then an early 5 program before kindergarten.

Just wondering how old your little one was when they started preschool. Especially curious as to what those with LO's with fall birthdays have done.

Re: Preschool- POLL

My twins just started preschool this year. They turned 3 the same week that school started. Are you able to pick how many days she would go for? I would maybe just do 2 days a week for the first year then go up to 3 days or more the next 2 years after.

I started both of my kids in preschool one day a week when they each turned 2 years old. By 2 1/2 they were going to school 3 days a week. At 4 years old they attend(ed) school 4 days a week.

Unfortunatly, not really. Because of her December bday only one school we looked into would accept her into a 3's program and their 3's program is 4 x a week for 2.5 hrs a day. There is one other school that has what they call a younger 3's program that she could go into (they separate by 6 month intervals) but the cost for their 2 day program is the same as the 4 day program at that other school-- which didn't make sense to us. Alternatively we can choose to place her in a 2's program 2 days a week but as she will be turning 3 within a few months of starting and as she at this point, is pretty advanced for her age, I think she may be too old for a 2's class.. the school did give us the option of "dropping" her down to a 2's class if we felt that the 3's were too advanced for her when she starts.

Re: Preschool- POLL

we actually did what you're looking at doing. DS will turn 3 this Saturday... so he's a late fall birthday.
he started a 3s program in September... so obviously he wasn't quite 3 when he started. I was nervous when I got the class list, because it had the kids birthdays on there, and most of them are almost 6 months older than him!! I totally wasn't sure how he would do. but the school is a really small school in a church so I knew they would work with me if it didn't end up working out for DS. Their cut off is 12/31 so they do take kids even a little younger than him... there just aren't any in his class.
Honestly, he really surprised me and he's doing great! He loves it... and every time I go to get him, he comes running out of the room with his little backpack on saying " mommy! I had fun at school!!" Chat Icon
That said... the program he's in is only 2 mornings a week.... so 5 hours a week total.
you know your kid and if it might be too much right now.
but it really has been great for him... I feel like it can't hurt to try it out. I'm sure most places would work with you if you had to stop going or pull DC out.

We are going to go through this with DD.

Her birthday is early January, so she won't be taken into many 3s (though she will def be ready).

She will go to a toddler program (2s) 2 days a week, but then a program with 3s, 4s, and 5s the following year.

With my 2nd ds we signed him up to start in Sept and he was turning 3 in October. He wasn't ready and we dropped out and he restarted in March and did much better.

Re: Preschool- POLL

In our circles, most kids start some type of preschool around 2.5. I have noticed that moms of 2 tend to send their kids earlier while moms of 1 tend to send their kids a bit older.

My DS started a Toddler Program of 2 and 3 year olds this year. He is 2 and will be 3 in December. There are children way younger than him in the class, too. I believe one of them just turned 2. He goes on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:45-11:45.

ETA: My DS is in the same position as your LO. His birthday is December 9th, so he just misses the cutoff. He will always be the oldest in his classes, so I figured I'd start now.

My 2 October boys started (well, the second one will start) school the September before they turned three. 5 mornings a week. With my older son, now in 2nd grade, we were sending him to catholic school and decided to send him to kindergarten when he was almost 6-so he did 3 years of nursery. I am not sure yet what I will do with my little one. With my second ds, he turned 2 in June and went to school 5 mornings a week that September.

This is us, too, except DD will be 3 in the first week of Jan. There are some kids who just turned 2 this fall, some that are around 2.5 and a few that almost exactly DD's age. She'll always be the oldest in her class, but that's ok with me because she can be a bit shy. I probably wouldn't have done a 2s program if she wasn't on the verge of turning 3.

I put DS in a 3s prog 1.5 mos before he turned 3... he did 3 years of preschool because I decided not to send him to K on time and sent him to a transitional preK/K instead. I dont regret starting him early at all.

DD1 started a 3s program at almost 3.5.

Next year DD2 will start a 3 program before she turns 3 (if they let me fudge a little since she misses the cutoff by 2 days Chat Icon Chat Icon)

My DD is in a daycare, in a home-type setting. I plan on putting her in a more structured preschool setting with before-care/after-care when she is 3.

It goes by school year. So she would do a 2 year program in the fall when she is 2 turning 3 and be one of the oldest.. Unless she is before the cutoff then she would start a 3 year program at 2 and turn 3 in the fall and be the youngest.

Although DD doesn't make the cutoff (she misses it by 2 weeks) the preschool we signed her up for is making an exception and allowing her into a 3s program anyway. So yes, she will be one of the younger ones. Thankfully they have something called an early 5s; program for kids who have done 3 and 4 programs but are still not ready for K, or don't meet the public school cut offs yet. So she will end up being one of the oldest in kindergarten anyway- unless I enroll her ina private K who will take her before the cut off and then send her to 1st grade in public school.

Who knew preschool was so complicated!!
Cant wait until we have to make decisions about college!

Re: Preschool- POLL

DS turned 2 in October. He is joining a 2 1/2 year old program in January, technically he will be 3 months too young. The class is 2 1/2- 3 1/2 so he will probably stay in the same class the next year. Then move up to the 3-4 class.
