Preschool - half day or whole day

DD will be going to Pre-K in September. I am so conflicted on whether to send her for half day or the whole day. This is her first time in any kind of school setting. I know every kid is different and I feel like she might be fine for the whole day, but I keep going back and forth.
We went to the school yesterday for an open house and she loved it, didn't want to leave.
Just curious what other moms did/will be doing.
TIA

this year dd is in a 2's program for 3 hours. Next year she will be going 3 days a weel full days 8:45-1:45 i think are the times. I am having a baby in May so I felt like school would be better for long days. Instead of at home with me and a baby lol. She could totally handle full day now if they offered it. Some in her class next year will be half days. It really depends on your schedule. Her school next year also says you can switch to fulltime at any time. Can that be an option? Like in Janurary.

They said that it's best to do full days and then switch to half if she's having a hard time. If we do half and try to switch to full - there might not be any spots left.

We are doing upk so it's 5 half days. If I could choose, I would prefer 3 full days. This year at 3 she's doing 2 half days which isn't much but I think 5 full days is a lot for prek especially if they haven't been in something already.

I know. 5 days seems like a lot, but then 5 half days seems like not enough - lol.
SO hard.

I agree. My DD goes half days. They have the rest of their school lives for full days. They're only 4 y/o, still little.

I agree too. That's why I keep going back and forth.
I just feel like if we go with 1/2 days - will she feel left out if she leaves at 11:30, while some kids stay? Will she be behind in learning, etc?
I'm prob thinking waaaay too much into this.

Ita! Too many hrs in full days, plus it's already 5 days a week. I'd do half days. My ds1 is starting in a week for the first time ever and he's doing 2 hrs a day, 2 days a week.

I say full day but I work FT so they have to be in school all day. I will say I think my DD learned a lot from being there full time and she will be really ready for K cause of it.

I work full time so I needed full day (DH is home in the afternoon for after school but some programs offer after care too). Honestly having that routine of going to school daily has been great for my DS.

5 1/2 days is plenty... They will have plenty of time attending school full time. Why rush it?

I would do full days. But that is coming from a mom that has a son in 10 hrs days since he was 8 weeks old.

He is fine with being in PreK for full days. There is plenty of learning and playing. The issue for me with 1/2 days is by the time they get in and settled the day is half over. And then the transition to full day K will be easy with full day PreK

From my experience I would probably would do full days if I could. Right now my three go 5 days a week 2.5 hours a day. My twins will be in K next year and I just feel that they aren't as ready as kids who go to pre-k full days. My youngest will be in pre-k in September and I did look at an affordable place that I could send him to for 3 or 5 full days. I decided to keep him where he is only because I was not impressed with the facilities. I love their current school and their teachers but I just wanted something more for DS for next year. Unfortunately it didn't work out that way. Also part of me is thinking that they have the next 13 years of being in school full time, so maybe it worked out for the best.

My 4 year old in Pre-K would be so bored at home all day, so I vote full day. Better to secure the spot and then reduce than to be shut out.

You know, this too.
DD NEEDS to be in a stimulating environment all day.
She gets so bored at home. It's torture for her
She loves going to school all day

Thanks for all the replies. I am leaning towards full day, but I can't shake that feeling that after a few hours, she's going to wonder where we are...Ugh! I hate this. Chat Icon

I voted full day. Dd1 is 2 and she goes 3 days a week from 915-1215. Next year she will be going 9-2. That's what the school offers. I'm not doing 5 days although most of the other kids are. Too me that's too much at 3.

i think it depends on your situation. are you a SAHM? do you need her in full day while you work?
DS turned 5 in november. he missed the cut off for K this year, so he's in pre-k. he goes 4 half days (like 9-12). i'm a SAHM, so he doesn't NEED to be in full day.... and like other people said, i feel like he's gonna have so many years of full day school, we'll keep it open for now. i want to take advantage of this time before he starts school to take him to the zoo, museums, library, panera lunch dates HAHA and stuff like that.
I don't feel like he's gonna be behind next year in K. his preschool is great and its amazing what they fit in those couple hours. what i DID do that his school offers is "lunch bunch", where the kids stay for lunch once or twice a week. just to get him used to eating lunch without me LOL
