Re: prenatals?
Dr. say you don't need prenatals until you are PG. But, you have to make sure you are taking 400 mg of Folic acid. I take Centrum and it only had a 100. So, I take Centrum + 400 Folic acid

if they contain 400 folic acid already, than you don't need any extra. I take Centrum, which only had 100, that is why i take the extra 400 folic acid.
You'll need 800 when you get PG.

I think it is very important to realize that everyone is different and everyone's doctors either prescribe or recommend vitamins (pre-natals or otherwise) for various reasons. There is no way my doctor would put me on a multi-vitamin or prenatal that had only 400mcg of folic acid and I am not pregnant yet. My pre-natals have 1000mcg (1mg) of folic acid for my needs. Each person needs to ask for their doctors' recommendations.

Re: prenatals?
I have trouble stomaching vitamins, so my Dr. gave me samples of some that he thought were good for me, with instructions to give each of them a try for several days, then get back to him. A few of them did upset my stomach. All of them caused some degree of constipation but I have found a clear favorite and that is PrimaCare One. I still have samples and I do not know how much it will cost or whether I would take a generic (given the fact that I don't really want any slight differences in formula to upset my stomach). I am very glad that I was able to adjust to taking them before pregnancy.

You are right Goldi, I should of been more careful and wrote 'MY dr. said". It is true that every doctor is different. Mine said to take 400mg of folic acid for 4 months in advance of getting PG. Considering that folic acid doesn't get 'stored' in the system, it didn't make sence to my DH (Dr). So, yes, every doc is different, and you should just go with the Doc you feel comfortable with. my DH said to follow the GYN's advice, as they may have their reasons.
