Pregnant teachers...

How have the parents responded to your pregnancy?

I teach 8th grade and I had a few parents come up to me and/or the principal on meet the teacher night "concerned" about my maternity leave. One of them actually suggested to the principal that I take the rest of the year off as not to "disrupt" the class a second time (by leaving and coming back).

Ummm sure.. would he like to PAY me to stay home?!?!!?!?

I am just Chat Icon that people have the balls to say such things. Maybe for my next kid I will send out permission slips to all the parents before I TTC?!?!?!?!!?

Wow. Some people have balls. I remember being in 8th grade and for some reason, I don't think this would've affected me that much.

I've had a couple clients with anxiety about my upcoming ML, but I've reassigned their cases already which has solved the potential "problems" that probably would not occur anyways.

Re: Pregnant teachers...

My parents have been really great actually, no complaints that I've heard of... I am leaving and then coming back at the end of the year too- just for about 5 weeks. I hate to distrupt twice, but there's really no choice.

I had a few parents ask, if I knew who would cover for me and if it would be someone permanent (for the rest of the year) and not random subs. Most of them took it well. (so far)

Re: Pregnant teachers...

When I was pregnant with my first son, all the parents were so supportive and they thought it was so nice to have their kids see how I progressed with my pregnancy.

I was due in June so they knew I was not going to be there for the last month. They had nothing negative to say about that either.

Re: Pregnant teachers...

I teach HS AP History & some parents expressed concern about me leaving since my kids all take the AP exam in May. I told them that they will be thoroughly prepared and will be fine. End of story. I understand their concerns & no one has been insulting to me.

Re: Pregnant teachers...

I have a story that takes the cake.

During meet the teacher day this year, I had a woman come storming into my room like she was the only person on the planet. She came up to me, started to say "Hi, you must be Mrs. Rivera" and then all of a sudden, she looks me up and down and says "Oh...you're pregnant...". I said "yes, I am" and she proceeds to have a hissy fit right in front of me! She's got her hands on her hips, talking to herself "I can't believe they did this to us AGAIN" and just going on and on.

I looked her straight in the eye and said "I'm sorry, but I don't plan my family around my job". Chat Icon

Re: Pregnant teachers...

So far, none have said anything negative to me. The kids are worried, but that is about it. What is awesome is that they are already interviewing for my position and I am not even going out until March! This is partially bc another teacher is going out now and the leave will cover us both. It is nice to have that security, though!

i told my class two weeks agi in hopes the kids would go home and break the news.. on back to school night i mentioned it and made some jokes, it all went over smooth (that i know)

Re: Pregnant teachers...

Meanwhile, teachers don't get paid as it is for maternity leave. For many of us, getting through the 6-8 weeks is hard. In my situation I borrowed days that took me 3 years to pay back.

So going 8 weeks without pay is hard enough, and then they want you to take the rest of the year off?

Seriously, with pregnancy hormones, I would have probably LOST IT!!!

Re: Pregnant teachers...

My parents were great about it, probably bc pregnancy is like an every month occurence in my school. I know that some were a little uneasy bc they had a leave replacement the prior year as well....but such is life. They were mostly concerned with the transition and who would be taking over, and when that person would start (to make it an easy transition) but I think I also told them that I wasn't planning on coming back for the rest of the year. Anyhow, I left 10 weeks early anyway so there was no "easy transition".

Re: Pregnant teachers...

Wow! I can't believe the things people say... I haven't had anyone say anything yet, but I'm the special ed teacher that goes into the room, so in many parents' eyes I'm less important. Plus, they only saw me at Back to School Night when I was 3 months along. We'll see what happens...

Re: Pregnant teachers...

I teach 5th grade and I talked a little bit about my leave replacement at Back to School night. I told them that I hope to work until I deliver (which is seeming harder and harder) and that I have a lot of material prepared for my replacement. They didn't ask any questions, so I guess they are fine with it.

I'm really disgusted by the reception some of you got from the parents you work with. They should be ashamed. Chat Icon

Re: Pregnant teachers...

I'm not a teacher but have been dealing with others anxieties about my leave. I've noticed the people with the biggest problem with it are people who have recently been on leave themselves. I find it very hypocritical and annoying! They've had almost 9 months to get used to the idea so DEAL!

Re: Pregnant teachers...

I'm not a teacher, but a speech therapist in an elementary school. My more special needs students' parents have expressed some concern, but I assured them my leave replacement is more than capable and their kids are in good hands.

I also had to practically swear on a bible that I was coming back....Chat Icon

Re: Pregnant teachers...

My parents were actually great about it. My leave replacement has been in my room since day 1, unless she is needed elsewhere in the building, so this really helped. SHe was also there for open house which really eased their minds and didnt leave them asking any questions. I dont intend on coming back till the following year. :)

Re: Pregnant teachers...

I'm 17 weeks and haven't told parents and students yet (I'm a middle school Resource Room teacher). I am NERVOUS about this...managed to get through Back to School Night without a problem, because I'm only just starting to show. I am planning on telling them in a week or two..and the stories on this thread are exactly why I've waited so long...some parents are unbelieveable. I have a bad feeling about the reaction I will get...especially because my students have special needs. I liked the response a PP wrote - "I didn't plan my family around work." That makes sense to me.

Re: Pregnant teachers...

I am a math teacher due in mid April so I am sure once I let my kids know I will receive phone calls on who will prepare them for the regents exam.

Honestly, I am not concerned what some parent has to say to me. I am not planning my personal life around the regents exam or their child's education.
