Pregnancy & overweight to begin with...

Just found out I'm 2 months pg. Prior to two months I've been watching my weight and walking when I could. I was 10 pounds shy of my weight goal.

Then two months later I gained 10 pounds from eating like there was no tomorrow and I stopped being active later finding out I'm pregnant.

I feel like the 10 pounds I gained in 2 months was not from the pg but from not doing anything and eating everything. Knowing I'll be gaining pg weight do you think it's possible to be able to loose the overweight weight still and not the pg weight? I just don't think the 10 pounds I gained could be from the pg. Any input advice?

No, you def can't lose weight now that you are pregnant - your body doesn't know the difference. Just watch what you are eating and try to make healthier choices going forward. Also, try to exercise more. Even walks around the neighborhood will help.

congrats on your pregnancy!! i wouldn't actively try to lose weight during pregnancy.. make healthy choices and feed your body has it needs and see where that takes you. You may lose a pound or so from healthy eating, but I wouldn't change anything drastically.

I know its hard to see the scale go up and up.. it will be ok. Chat Icon

Re: Pregnancy & overweight to begin with...

I had lost a lot of weight prior to getting pregnant (157 lbs) and still have 70 lbs to go to get to my goal weight.

Of course food and exercise was one of the first things that I disucssed at great length with my doctor when I went in for my first appt.

I told him I had been eating around 1300 calories, and he wanted me to increase it to 1800, he said never less then 1800 a day for any prenatal patient.

He did say that I could maintain my weight instead of gaining the 20-30 lbs that he usually recommends to his patients, since I still had more to lose, and recommended that I keep up with my exercise.

If you were walking before you got pregnant, walking is something gentle enough to get yourself back into even if you ahve taken 2 months off.

As for the eating, I have gained 5 lbs and I am 18 weeks pregnant. i am trying to keep it under control by still tracking my food. I write down everything that I eat and I check off my healthy foods, so I aim for 5+ fruits and veggies a day, at least 2 servings of whole grains, protien, and 2 healthy oils. I drink water and I get a vitamin every day.

Re: Pregnancy & overweight to begin with...

I had lost a ton of weight before getting married and then pregnant with DD #1. I gained 60 pounds with her, lost about 25, then put 15-20 back on.

For a variety of factors (stress, lack of exercise, etc), I never lost that weight. When I got pregnant with DD#2, I was 5 lbs shy of what I weighed when I gave BIRTH to DD#1....

I decided to listen to my body, make healthy choices and stay active. At 39 weeks, with a baby who is measuring 9+lbs and excess amniotic fluid, I have gained a grand total of about 15 pounds. I can tell that some of my pre-pregnancy clothes are loose on me everywhere except the belly.

I wasn't actively trying to lose weight, that isn't advised while pregnant. But if you are concious of what you are eating, making good choices and staying active, you can keep the gain under control!

Best of luck!! Chat Icon

It's not recommended to diet while pregnant. I would start walking again, or do light cardio to get yourself back into shape. I have been pretty successful at gaining the "right" amount of weight with my 2 previous pregnancies. Try to stay even for now. Eat good food. And then once you hit the second trimester, a pound a week is a good amount to gain.
