SPR: Overweight before pregnancy ?

I'm not pregnant yet, but am possibly going to try as of the new year. I am currently 45 lbs overweight, all due to previous pregancies and never getting the weight off.

I know you are NOT supposed to diet while pregnant, but is it possibly to "lose" weight while pregnant? In other words, is it possible that when eating healthier than you had been before you got pregnant help you to not gain weight...sort of even out, pre se? In hopes that you'll only have to lose the orginal weight you started off with...and maybe some extra! Chat Icon

I hope that made sense!

Thanks in advance Chat Icon

Re: SPR: Overweight before pregnancy ?

yes. I have become MUCH more conscious of what and how much I eat. Up until 20 weeks, I was down weight. At my 20 week appt. I was only up 2 lbs (but I ate horribly the few weeks before the appt.)

I think that If I am conscious of how I eat, I will keep my weight gain to less than 10 lbs. Everyone looks at me like I have 20 heads when I say that but I do not want to gain massive weight. My Chat Icon is measuring perfectly, even a little ahead so I am not concerened.

I actually read an article recently that said as long as the mother is not below average weight to begin, there is no real reason for 20+ lbs. weight gain. All you need is 300 calories extra per day. Eat the proper foods and get those extra 300 calories from the right foods and you wont gain Chat Icon

Re: SPR: Overweight before pregnancy ?

I lost weight when I was pregnant. I was also overweight. I gained a total of 13lbs during my pregnancy. However, I had GD and was on a very strict diet. My first week on my GD diet, I lost 3lbs. And for the majority of my 3rd trimester, I did not gain or lose anything.

I thought as much but wasn't sure. I just see so much information saying not to diet while pregnant (I wouldn't be dieting, but rather eating the foods I should have been eating in the first place Chat Icon and not eating so much of it too! Chat Icon )

Re: SPR: Overweight before pregnancy ?

I'm was very overweight before getting pg this time around. At 28 weeks I am currently down 2lbs....and I eat like crap Chat Icon My stomach kills me if I eat raw fruits or veggies. I also had m/s up to about 27 weeks so that might have contributed to it also.

With my 1st pg I was just as overweight when I got pg and only gained 12 1/2 lbs the entire time.

Unless you are ill (i.e. morning sickness) you really should not be dropping lbs in pregnancy. Yes eating healthier and even certain exercises is perfectly safe but at best you should be maintaining your weight not losing. Obviously if you change up your diet you may initially lose some weight but it shouldn't be consistant during the pg.

Re: SPR: Overweight before pregnancy ?

i lost weight in the beginning, mostly due to nausea and not being able to eat.
I wouldn't "diet" but what better a time to change your eating habits and start to eat more nutritious food. Also some light exercise is great for you and baby

Re: SPR: Overweight before pregnancy ?

I'm overweight and was before I got pregnant.

The first thing the dr. told me was NOT to try to lose weight. He also said I might because of morning sickness and eating healthier, but that other than that I really should not go on a diet or try to lose weight. He also warned me not to gain much more than 15-20 lbs.

At 16w I had only gained 2 lbs. However, by 20w I gained 10lbs total. I also got weighed the Monday after ThanksgivingChat Icon . we'll see what my weight is like 1228...but then again that'll be the Monday after Christmas.

Re: SPR: Overweight before pregnancy ?

I was overweight before I got pregnant.

My dr told me NO DIETING at all and to gain between 10-15lbs. I eat healthier not to lose weight but because its good for baby bean and because I have these intense cravings for fruit and veggies.

at 9 weeks i was down 12lbs from having bad nausea where I couldn't eat a bite of anything. My dr was fine with it however I do think I am up some. I haven't been weighted since then and im 13 weeks and wont been seen till 15 weeks..after xmas.

Re: SPR: Overweight before pregnancy ?

I am not really sure. I think if you do get pregnant either way eating as healthy as possible is a great thing to do regardless of weight. Also is it possible to increase your activity level while ttc? Then when you get your bfp you can keep it up, and that should help w/ putting on any additional weight.
I know for me I didn't gain any weight the 1st trimester. I am sure since my last appt I have gained a few lbs now that my appetite is back.
If your concerned you should speak to your doctor, or maybe even a nutritionist would be helpful. Good luck!

My doctor actually said that if I ate very healthy (she gave me some ideas when I asked her), that I could weigh LESS on the day before I give birth than I did before I got pregnant.

I was overweight before my BFP and at 20 weeks was up 9lbs total. I was advised to keep my total weight gain at 18 lbs so considering that I'm half way, I will not be able to stick to that, but I think I COULD if I ate strictly healthy foods and stopped drinking juice, the ocassional soda, so many carbs, etc.

Not PG anymore but I was overweight before both of my pregnancies.

With DS I was much more conscious of what I was eating (MS helped too!) and I lost in the beginning and then gained 5lbs.

With my twins I gained 15lbs total by the time I had them.

My dr. was never concerned about it. I wasn't trying to diet, it was just the way my body handled pregnancy.

agreed, I was told the same thing. If you are eating properly and the baby is measuing properly, it is not necessary to gain weight (unless you are underweight). I was told not to gain more than 15 lbs. if possible. At 20 weeks, I am only up 2 and it isnt b/c im depriving myself, its b/c im making better decision (also having some aversions)...

its about quality, not quantity! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: SPR: Overweight before pregnancy ?

The PPs who say it can happen and healthfully if you're just eating right and not actually dieting - that's consistent with what my doctors have said and makes perfect sense to me - if you go from eating like cr@p to eating the way you should be plus 300 calories (that's all the extra you need - about an apple and a yogurt), and your body's burning more creating a human being, then it makes sense that you would lose weight. I would think you'd flatten at some point though. I started out a little overweight - my OB wanted me to limit what I've gained - I'm 36 weeks and was up 17 at my last appointment. Your body will do what it needs to do and if you're overweight, you just don't need to gain as much. I've had very strong food aversions throughout so it's been hard to eat healthy, but the quantity of food I find I need is really not different than before so it took me a long time before I really started to gain any weight.

Re: SPR: Overweight before pregnancy ?

I was about 40lbs overweight pre-pregnancy, and during the first tri I lost 12 lbs bc of the ms and changes in my eating habits (more smaller - healthier - meals throughout the day). So... it is possible!

Re: SPR: Overweight before pregnancy ?

I was told it is very common with m/s and eating healthier to lose weight in the beginning. I was also told to watch my food intake and to not "eat for 2" but to make healthy decisions. I was about 60lbs overweight and am still down 10lbs in my 35th week due to gallstones and hyperemesis. The main thing is that baby is growing and getting nutrition. I do indulge, but my food aversions and lack of appetite have made it a true miracle when that happens. I think as long as the goal is healthy eating to include an extra 300 calories and not to "diet" then you're fine. If they have any concerns they'll talk to you and do growth sonos, but just measuring the uterus is a pretty good indicator of growth as well. I do realize you aren't pg yet, just wanted to add the last part for when you are.

Re: SPR: Overweight before pregnancy ?

I was at my heaviest before I got pregnant. My doctor preferred that I gain 15 lbs, 20 at most. I never dieted, but I ate pretty healthy and definitely didn't overindulge. I ended up gaining 45 lbs during pregnancy. I probably gained about half of it during the third trimester due to severe swelling. While it may be possible to lose weight or only gain a small amount during pregnancy, some women will gain no matter how healthy they eat or how much exercise they get. Everyone's body reacts differently to pregnancy. FWIW, I lost over 30 lbs within the first week after delivery and the rest of the weight by 6-8 weeks PP.
