Pool Safety Gates?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a company that installs pool gates?

After hearing about these poor children drowning recently I've decided to install one.

Any fence company can provide you with quotes for pool fencing. You just need it be 54" tall and the gate must be a self-latching close that swing out not in.

With that said here is my opinion on fences:

I never voice my opinion, and please don't take offense, but I grew up around pool, had a pool with our second house and now we are in the process of having one put in our current home.

I think the best thing you can do to protect your child/children is teach them to swim and not be afraid of the water. I was also dead set on having a fence around our pool. In our previous house we had that. One day we were in the pool, got out for lunch (we were sitting inside of the fenced area) and were getting ready to go back in. DH was in the pool and I was sitting 10 feet from the pool with my DD. DS would wear swimmies in the pool and jump in. DS went to the side of the pool and sometimes he would do that to look to see if it was clear of bugs and would walk back. This particular day he decided to just jump in. My heart sank and it took a few seconds to register what happened, but I jumped in after him. He was fine and was actually swimming to the top. After that I realized that a fence wasn't' going to protect him and when we re-did the yard we took it down and never had an issue.

It's sad to hear these stories in the summer, but things happen in front of parents so often even with fences.

Re: Pool Safety Gates?

Thanks for the advice.
I agree with you 100% about teaching children how to swim. My DS is 1.5 yrs old and LOVES the pool. We are in the process of teaching him now. And thankfully your DS was ok!

Just as an extra precaution I'd like to install one. I'd also like to have it for the safty of others. You hear so many stories about children getting into their neighbors backyards and drowning in their pools.

This is the reason we are installing one around ours. It's not so much for our own kids but just in case someone wonders or to be safer during playdates. I think teaching our own kids to swim is of course a must!!

I totally agree with the above. DS is in swim lessons for the second year now and we do have a gate around our pool. Having a gate is another option in keeping your kids and other kids safe. Definitely do it.

it's important from a liability standpoint. i am pretty sure that if someone goes to rob your house but gets injured in/around your pool because there is no fence, they can sue you and hold you liable for damages, as ridiculous as that sounds

This is very interesting and you're making me wonder if I should be more worried about my neighbor's pool now. Chat Icon They have a short (maybe it's 48 in but it looks short by my standards) chain link fence around their yard and no additional fence around the pool. After hearing about the kids who got into the neighbor's pool I am nervous. So is the chain link they have around the yard illegal then?

We're in the process of deciding on and planning for a pool. We will be doing a non-climbable fence around the yard and another around the pool, along with alarm and any other safety feature we can come across. You just can't be too safe. Of course children must always be supervised but extra safety measures can't hurt.

FYI- they also make wrist bracelets that are hooked up to a monitor that can sit on your counter. If the child falls in, the monitor goes off.

We got aluminum around our pool. It looks like iron. Port Jeff Fence installed it within a couple days of contacting them. I think it looks great and does the job!
