POLL: How much $$ did you make right out of college?
Just curious... all of my friends are in law or med school or have some kind of engineering or specialized degree, so I don't know if these offers are good,a vg, whatever...if it was a long time ago, I guess you cna adjust for inflation if you have to.
and what did you do. For privacy, you can post the # JUST in the poll.

I started at $28K a year  I think shortly after me they raised entry-level to $30K. I started here more than 5 years ago but it was pre-September 11th so I'd say it's probably around $30-32K now. I look back and cannot fathom how I made it work (I lived in the city paying a TON of $ in rent too!).

OMGosh my first job out of college was in 1988 and my salary was 18K in NYC. I then got 2K raises every 3 months but boy what a difference!!
ETA -- At the time this was more than all of my fiends started out at.
Now I make a lot more tho...

I'm working only because I can't afford grad school!
Honestly, I don't know how anyone could live on their own on the money these jobs are paying. Living expenses are just too high! Plus a lot of people out of college don't have a wardrobe for work, so they have to buy it (which is why I hope I get this jeans job!) If I didn't have a 2 income household with FH or live with mom, I'd never make it work.

Did you all do the same thing you're doing now, or something totally different?
I have a 2nd interview for a job I think I would really LOVE on Monday, but I'm trying not to get too excited because #1, it'll make me nervous, and #2, if I don't get the job then I'll be sad... I'm also waiting on an answer for that dept store gig, which pays more, but would probably rob me of my soul and sanity.

So does my FH, so my first job will probably pay about half as much as his did.
I went to a panel at the career center at school on What to do with a liberal arts degree, and their answer was "go to grad school, go to law school, or be a barista at starbucks" not very encouraging!

That was a publishing job, I can tell already I started in publishing in 2000 and was paid $22K. Entry-level got bumped to 25K within three months and the next year entry level went up to 28K. In a year's time I went up 6K but looking at where I started, it wasn't that great.
I am now in grad school to become a librarian and while they don't get tons of money, their entry-level salary is at least 10K more than publishing is now.

This is going to sound rude, but it's a legitimate question, but what kinds of things do you learn going for a grad degree in library science (is that what it's called)? I'm really curious, because I don't know anyone who is a librarian and I didn't know that it required a degree until I saw it when I was applying to colleges. I really have no idea what goes into being a librarian.

When I graduated college in 1999, I started out at an aduld day tx facility making $25,000. By the time I left 2 years later to go to grad school, I was making a little over $28,000. Thank goodness I still lived at home!

I have an engineering degree too, but I made less! I started my first job after grad school in 1995 in the $40K's.
I made a career change, so started working full time in 2004. I also started in the low 50s

My first job out of college (in 1994) I was making 25K and commuting from LI to NYC.
When I moved out on my own in 1996...I was making 28K and commuting from NJ to NYC...I have no idea how I did that

Another publishing salary here. . .I started out at $21,000 in 1998. I am with the same company now & the last time that position was hired ( Nov.04) , I believe it started around 24,000.
I lived at home for 9 months ( commuiting from LI to NYC) & then got an apartment in Astoria with a roommate, who started off in social work at about 25,000. DH was making around the same doing data entry & database programming, so I guess it was average for the time, but I had accountant friends that started at what I am making now, 8 years later.
I made it work. My roomate & I bought a lot of clothes at $10 stores.
I laugh when people say, OMG I was making now money & it turns out it was what I was making after 6 years.
ETA- now, 8 years alter, I work in the same company, same department, but have been promoted twice.

I don't know if it's so much that some people like communting on the train, as it is there there are more job opportunities in the city, especailly if you are looking for, or are qualified for, a certain field.

Don't worry, I didn't know until I asked. I just started, but a lot has to do with technology management (and usage), choosing appropriate books for library collections, cataloguing, special library programs, reference services (need to know a lot about a lof things). Consider the fact that a lot of libraries on LI are doubling as community centers. There is a need to understand the community and its needs.
As far as publishing paying so low, it goes back to a time when publishing was filled with trust fund babies who graduated from Seven Sisters colleges and were looking for a nice respectable career but didn't really need a lot of money. Publishing has more glamour and prestige than pay.

Of course. I'm just saying it's worked out that way, or really I've chosen it that way when I have a choice....unless I get picked for the job in Herald Square... that was my first choice and would be awesome, but they said they send most people to their 2nd choice, because Herald Sq is so hard.
