Are there any tickets left within 2 hours driving that do the polar express story? Would love a steam train too. Thanks!

There are some tickets left in Kingston - Catskill Mountain Railroad. But, the peak times are sold out.

Have you done this? I'm reading the reviews online and some are really harsh. I've wanted to take my DS for years and am finally ready to pull the trigger when I came across these horrendous reviews.

I have not but, have friends who have and enjoyed it. They liked it better than Phillipsburg, NJ.

My kids aren't into hot cocoa or the Polar Express so I never have been able to justify the cost.

We did this one, not a fan. It is not a steam train (or it wasn't when we did it a few years back. My DS was super into the Polar Express and that was the first thing he noticed when we pulled into the parking lot). We did Essex the year before and Kingston just did not compare to it.

We could not get tickets to Essex and did Kingston last year. We had a lot of fun. It was cute. Our sons were 3 & 6. It is run by volunteers that work very hard. We stayed at a nearby hotel that had a pool and free breakfast.

We are doing Kingston this year. You can watch a Youtube video of the whole thing and it looks cute. My kids have never done Essex so there's no room for disappointment. They've actually never seen Polar Express either. I bought the DVD and I figured they could watch it in the car on the way there. We also have a house not to far from Kingston so it makes much more sense for us to go there than to have the expense of the Polar Express and the expense of a hotel on top of that.

We have a house up there too. We're about 20 minutes away and figured we'll just make a long weekend out of it.

Got tickets yesterday. I actually saw some nice reviews on here and ended up having a friend that went last year and they loved it.

DS has never been to the Essex one so he has nothing to compare it to either. It's all rolled into his Christmas present this year - more memories less "stuff"... and he loves the movie and has the train under the tree, so I think it will be a win.

Thanks everyone for your reviews! Chat Icon

We are doing it this year. I only saw positive reviews when i got the tickets a fews ago.. now im nervous!! My husband refused to go to NJ and Essex had long sold out so we opted for Kingston. We were going to check out frosty fest too but I dont think we will have time for that. Anyone have any idea how far Kingston is from Nassau COunty?

I never heard of Frosty fest. Just googled it. Has anyone here ever been? I love trying new things with the kids. They will be 4 & 7.
