Plus Size TTC's
Hey Gals, We are TTC yet, but I've put on a lot of weight since marriage and I know I've got to loose weight (and quit smoking) before I TTC. How much weight is too much weight for a preggo lady?
PLEASE ONLY ANSWER IF YOU ARE PLUS SIZED. Thanks

I don't know what you consider plus-sized, but I dropped 40 lbs before becoming PG. I think everyone's body type & health from their weight is different & your Dr is the best person to answer that question.

Re: Plus Size TTC's
basically I consider plus sized exactly what plus sized is. If you are overweight before you start TTC, did you loose weight. If you are plus sized, then you know what I'm talking about.

Re: Plus Size TTC's
i am about 30 pounds overweight. I read online that its better to try to gain less during preg. Not diet, just eat right. An under weigth person needs to gain during preg, overweight doenst. Dep. on how overweight you are it could lead to complications such as gest diab...but honestly, there are many overweight poeple that have babies, you should be fine, just eat helthy during preg...

Re: Plus Size TTC's
I am plus size about a 16/18. I am currently TTC for my second, my first I conceived when I was really thin, so this is pretty new to me as well. I am not going crazy trying to lose weight because I never been really good at keeping it off and I am not doing anything unhealthy like crash diets. I have just been trying to eat better and walk more. My Dr gave me the go ahead so I am not overly concerned with my weight as it is right now.I plan to BF and I hope that will help in losing whatever I gain during pregnancy. In your case I would focus more on trying to quit smoking first. Because that is the hardest and when you do most likely you will gain some more weight.

Re: Plus Size TTC's
Formerly plus sized here.
There are risks to being too over weight BEFORE as well as during pregnancy to both yourself and your child. Fertility is a factor in women who have too much OR too little weight before pregnancy. I know many women who did not have regular periods until their weight was stable- whether they had to gain or lose). Gestational diabetes is one risk and the chances of neural tube defects as well as developmental disabilities in a child increase with the more weight a woman carries.
That is not to say that a woman who is over weight cannot have a healthy child. They can and do every day - my mother was close to 200 pounds when she had me I am sure of it. My field of study and my work experience in special education has perhaps given me some insight and scares me a little bit.
I, myself am now at a healthy weight but terrified of putting more on - even through pregnancy. I decided to maximize my chances of keeping my weight gain tolerable and healthy throughout a pregnancy by re-starting an exercise regimen and watching my nutritional intake.

Re: Plus Size TTC's
I am plus size, and am actively TTC. We have been having complications (I have PCOS) which I am sure is due to my weight. I am not totally insulin resistent, but my doc put me on Metformin to help keep my insulin levels, well... level. I am being more careful about what I eat and have completly cut sugar out of my diet. My doctor also said that simply by losing weight, it can make all the difference in the world in helping us to conceive.

Yes I was overweight. Yes it lead to a long list of health issues & yes I lost weight before getting PG.

This link might help answer your question:
LINK Although I think the guidelines are helpful, there are so many factors regarding health & weight & how it can affect TTC & PG. That was what I was trying to say in my first post. Best thing to do IMO is take all the info that you can find - pers experience, info from the net, etc & bring it to your Dr when you want to talk TTC with them.
PS- last week some of the Drs that did this study are now saying that they think this # is too high as the "allowable weight gain." I always thought it was low, based on what I have seen from BTDT moms & what they gained. This is why I take it all with a grain of salt

Re: Plus Size TTC's
I am plus-size and have been pregnant twice, totally uneventfully. I did lose a bit of weight before each pregnancy, but still definitely plus-size.
I think if you have health complications prior to becoming pregnant, you have more risk. But I always had good blood pressure, etc. and had no issues.
My doctor did ask that I gain as little as I could. With my first I was a bit thinner and I gained around 20-ish pounds, with my second I was heavier and gained nothing (and no, I wasn't dieting).
Good luck!
