I know for some, kneading it out in the shower works for them. I had it twice, and both times i let it go too long that i ended up in the ER. It was inflammed, warm, hurt everytime i BF or pumped. The doc actually had to cut me to drain it (ouch!!). Definitely keep on pumping or Bf thru the pain.

for me the only thing that worked to unclog it was actually nursing. i would always get it when i was away from DD for too long. pumping alone never cut it.

What always worked for me was to fill a zip lock bag with warm/hot water (whatever you can tolerate) and put it on the area of pain for 20 minutes before you nurse/pump. then when you nurse or pump massage the area like crazy. It is painful but it works.

I had twins...there was no time for long hot showers!

Massaging while I pumped helped me and putting the heating pad on it. I also pumped more often than usual. If it becomes warm to the touch, red or really hurts you should go to the doctor. They can sometimes become infected and you could need antibiotics. Feel better!

Hot shower with deep massaging

Big comb, put soap on it in shower and comb down firmly from top towards nipple

Nurse on all fours straddling above your LO

Always nurse clogged breast first

Massage and pump

If all else fails what always worked for me was a sterilized needle at the source of the clog Chat Icon It was creepy but SWEET relief!! Chat Icon

Re: Please talk to me about Clogged Milk Ducts

I just had one 2days ago, I had dS last Monday my milk came in so fast my right breast clogged. I tried a shower, massage, I kept pumping but that led to blisters on my nipples from the suction but nothing coming out. I finally plugged in a heating pad and had it on me all night and pumped every 2 hours and by the next mid morning it opened up and I got 5oz out of it!! It was 3x the size of my other boob. Lol it was quit a sight!!! Someone also told me to use a wide toothed comb and comb it out like a hickey. Lol also I read to nurse on all fours and let gravity take its course. I EPump so I just kept pumping away.

Best of luck I know how sore it can be.

Re: Please talk to me about Clogged Milk Ducts

thanks for the replies. New Question... I just pumped a lot and massaged alot. I think I may have released it but everyone talked about feeling relief. Not to get too graphic but I don't feel a rock hard lump anymore which I did earlier tonight. But I am still really sore. But it seems like that could be residual soreness, kwim?

So...were you still sore after you got rid of the clog?

Thanks!

Yes, I was still sore for a couple of days. I felt relief and the next day it felt MUCH better!

Re: Please talk to me about Clogged Milk Ducts

I had 1 last week and gor did it hurt. I use a heating pad and just massage while pumping. I didn't know it was better till I went to massage again in that pump session and it was not there.
