Please settle a debate
So Saturday, Boosh was going to cook a nice dinner out of the "Everyday Italian" cookbook. The recipe was roasted chicken with a marinade of balsamic vinegar, lemon, and a few other ingredients.
Anyway, I do the grocery shopping so I told her to give me a list of what she needed. She put down "a container of balsamic vinegar."
I bought home a bottle of "balsamic vinegarette," and got my head chewed off, because it's not the same thing 
My question is, is there really that big of a difference between vinegar and vinegarette?

Yes. The vinaigrette is already mixed with the oil and some spices....the vinegar is just that, vinegar.

Yes. Can you distinguish between a bottle of vegetable oil and a bottle of Italian Salad dressing? To me, it is a similar comparison. Vinegar is plain and used as an ingredient in other things. Vinegarette is salad dressing or an already prepared marinade.

the recipe title says "balsamic vinegarette" chicken
yet calls for balsamic vinegar

 My DH does the same thing. I had on our shopping list vegitable oil. He brought home corn oil, because he wasn't sure what vegitable I wanted and figured corn was a safe bet.

Dh has done stuff like that before. I simply tell him to go back and get me what I need.
He actually is programmed to do that now before I have the chance to chew him out.
Very logical of you to think that you would need vinaigrette though..since I'm sure when it's all said and done it tastes like it.

in a joking way - not like she yelled at me
after dodging traffic and dealing with all sorts of detours because the main avenue was being used for a columbus day parade - and dealing with a long line in the store, carrying 10 big bags of groceries and putting them away - she knew better than to tell me to go back
