Please help! (Newborn gas issues) - UPDATE!
We're at a complete loss! DS is 4 weeks old tomorrow. It seems like over the past 2 weeks or so, his gassiness is just getting worse and worse. Originally, he was on Similac Advanced ready to feed. Then we switched to Similac Sensitive for fussiness and gas ready to feed. The ped also rec putting 1 tsp of chamomile tea in all of his bottles. So we've been doing that plus doing mylicon. The ped said that we should give him double the rec dose of mylicon after each bottle as well so we're doing that. But it didn't really make much of a difference. So a friend rec Enfamil Gentlease. We switched to that but DS was spitting up practically the whole bottle after each feeding on that. I called the ped and he suggested going back to Similac but going to the Isomil Soy one. So now we're on the Similac Ready to feed Soy formula with a tsp of chamomile tea in each bottle and .6ml of Mylicon after each feeding. But I'm still not seeing much of a difference. He continues to be noticible uncomfortable when he's awake. He kicks his legs, bring them up to his tummy and hiccups all the time. He is passing gas all the time as well. I'm thinking of trying colic calm but I really don't know. Any advice is greatly appreciated!!! TIA!!
UPDATE!
So we went to the ped on Thursday and she is testing him for milk allergies to be safe but she doesn't think he has them. Test 1 of 3 already came back negative. She suggested Alimentum. I rather not go that route just yet. So DH did some research on "old school" remedies to ease gas discomfort and came across all this info on massage. Well - let me just tell you it's been a God sent!! Vinny slept for 5 1/2 hours straight Thursday night and then 6 hours straight last night! His gas is still there but he is not nearly as uncomfortable as before. We took him off the soy and put him back on Similac for fussiness and gas (the orange one). I'm  we finally figured this one out! Again, thanks for all your input and advice!!!

The only thing that helped my DS was time. For the first 8 weeks he cried all the time from the gas. I have him on gentlease cause it helped the most. He is still gassy but he knows how to deal with it now.
I know you don't believe it cause I didn't but it will get better.

DO u think DH may be colic? My son had the same symptoms, besides being colic, we ended up switching his formula 5x.We brought him to a gi doctor and they found a small trace of blood in his stool which was a sign of a milk allergy. DH may need to be on alimentum or nutramigen (proteins are partially broken down). OR we are on prescription formula now called Elecare(the proteins are100% broken down).
I did try colic calm and it helped more so then the gas drops. It just stains everything cause its black in color. also, did the leg bicyce exercises as well as warm baths massaging his belly, the swing, white noise like a vacuum cleaner...

I know what you are going through. We are on gentlease now and he is not 100% better. We are using gripe water, drops and as of last night we are using colic calm. I really think that, like Allison said, the biggest player is going to be time which kills me because we are shot, he is uncomfortable and we need to be better!

Did the ped check his stool for blood? He could have a dairy/soy allergy. my DD did, and once dairy was cut out (i was BF, but there are formulas with no soy or milk protein) she was like a new baby.

DS had the same issues and we switched to Gentlease at 6 weeks, and also started using the Dr. brown's bottles. It did take about a week or so to see the change in him, not sure if it was time or the bottles or the formula or just a combination of all.

We have DS on soy. We use Playtex dropins so we can remove as much of the air in the bottle as possible. I give him warmer then recommended baths and massages his tummy with a warm wet washcloth during his bath. I do the "bicycle" with him every hour or so. We rub him back for burps instead of tapping him. WE also put mylicon in every bottle. He also gets 2ozs of chamomile tea w/ 1tsp of brown sugar a day.
Colic Calm did help as well so I'd try it.

 Ugh i feel your pain! I actually had a similar post about 8 weeks ago.
My son (now 12 weeks) would scream for 3 hours every night from such painful gas. It was awful. We tried everything. bicycling the legs, mylicon, gripe water, mothers keeper, colic calm, etc etc.
We changed bottles 4 times. Ended up with Dr Brown bottles which believe it or not, made a difference. NOt a huge difference, but he went from burping 6 times during a bottle to only twice a bottle.
We also switch formulas 5 times. Have the ped test for a milk allergy just in case. My son had worst gas on alimentum and nutramigen. He was much better on Good Start Gentle but it gave him diarrhea. We finally ended up on Similac Sensitive for gas and spit up (orange). The first 2 days i thought he was getting worse, but i stuck it out. It has helped his gas a ton and he's doing much better.
any chance your baby has reflux? Does he have crying fits from the gas?
Unfortunately it took time, which i hated hearing that answer. Between the dr browns, finding the right formula and so forth... it took time to find the right combo. But those first 2 months, i thought i wasn't going to survive if we didn't find the fix soon.  Luckily we did and you will too!

i agree the only thing that helps is time. IMO constantly changing formulas just makes the situation worse. my PED was very specific that it is completely normal for babies to get gas and look pained but that it is more uncomfortable for us to watch then it is for them to experience (this is distinctly different from reflux and milk allergy issues which cause more pain crying then gas alone). it eases up by 3m and then just disappears and you pretty much forget all about it. the mylicon and gripe water didnt do enough to warrant using them, and i try to stay away from medicating as much as possible so when it was my DD with the gas issues i found it better to just wait it out. if he's just squirmy and not actually crying (even in his sleep), you may not need to be doing all of these things, he may just have an immature stomach and grow out of it very soon. that is exactly what happened with my DD - she was never crying about it but was often whiny and squirmy, even in her sleep.
for us we started with similac advanced to supplement nursing (DD was a NICU preemie). we tried switching to gentlease and it was a disaster. gentlease is a partially digested milk protein. if your child doesn't actually have any sensitivity to lactose, then there is no reason for them to be on gentlease. in our case thats what happened so when we switched seh would need like 1.5x the amount of formula to keep her full, and she would end up spitting half of it up anyway. we went back to similac advanced and she's still on it now at 11m.

The issue with similac advance is that it is mostly a casein formula. Caesin in the harder to digest protein in milk - unlike whey, which is easier.
I would actually go to enfamil newborn - since gentlease didn't work. It is whey predominant so its easier to digest. I would not go to a similac soy or sensitive product or allimentum - the 2nd ingredient is table sugar - and there is no need for any baby to have sugar in their formula.
if newborn doesn't work - you could try soy (although it is not my favorite product).
However, most of the time the baby will grow out of gas. It is due to an immature gut.

Thank you all so much for all your different ideas. We use Dr. Browns already. Last night was a nightmare! He was up most of the night and I felt so bad for him. You could see the pain in his face. He was pushing, turning red, passing gas, burping. It was horrible. We have an appt with the ped today. I'm not leaving there without having some sort of plan. I understand that gas is a natural part of being a newborn but how can it go on like this?!?!? He's sleeping noticibly less now, he's more uncomfortable. It breaks my heart to see him like this.

My ds just turned 4 weeks old and recently started screaming through his feedings and seemed excessively gassy. We switched to gentlease two days ago and already I am seeing an improvement. He still has a lot of gas but our feedings have been getting better. He even slept for four hours straight last night which has never happened. It could just be a fluke but I am really hoping the formula was the issue!

I just read your post to my DH because it is literally the same situation we are in right now, everythig you wrote is what we are going through and what we have tried so far. Went to ped today, and yes, we were basically told this is just how some babies are and only time will change it. I asked about Colic Calm and she said give it a try. I ran right to CVS and bought it. Not sure if it's a fluke or not but he just slept for 4 hours during the day. I'll let you know how tonight goes (6pm-9pm is our worst time). Hang in there!!!
