Please help me understand something about breastfeeding while in the hospital
I'm going to try to breastfeed when my  is born. But when we're in the hospital, how does it work at night? I'm pretty sure I want him to stay in the nursery over night and not have the nurses bring him in to me when he wakes for a feeding. Will they provide me with a pump to pump for night feedings or do I have to bring my own?
Ugh! I already feel guilty writing not to bring him to me for night feedings. Please, no flames for that. I've just spoken to so many family and friends about it and they all tell me the same thing about just trying to use those 2 nights for a little sleep and let the nurses take care of him. Who knows though, maybe I'll change my mind when I'm there. But now I'm off the point of my post. So, back to the original question about the pumping....anyone know? I'm delivering at Mercy if that makes any difference.

I think most if not all the hospitals want you to keep the baby in the room. They discouraged me from sending the baby to the nursery. Also they will bring the baby back for all the feeding whether your BF or FF. The also bring them back if they get fussy. I wouldn't bother with the pump since they will bring him to you so even if you pump you will still feed him the bottle

not sure but i heard you dont really make enough to pump right away???? someone tell me if i heard wrong!
i was planning on telling htem to keep baby until he needs to eat...so i can sleep a little bit cause i know if he is in the room i wont sleep a wink bc i will be so nervous

Personally, I wouldn't pump that early unless necessary. (And I started pumping at 6 days, so I know what it's like to pump early.) I found it much easier to feed when DS woke up because all you need to do is whip out the breast. If you take the time to pump, there goes 20 minutes that you could've been sleeping in between sessions. But it's all up to you.
Not sure if you have to bring your own pump. I was in a different hospital, so each one might have it's own policy.

If you are going to wake up to pump, you might as well nurse. You won't be sleeping or resting either way.

Don't feel bad at all! 
I have to say though, if you are planning to breastfeed your baby, you will have to wake and do the feedings. The more you put the baby to breast, the better your milk production will be. Pumping isn't really recommended until your supply is established. The baby will dictate that by how often and how much he/she feeds.
It is all about supply and demand. I suppose you could eventually make enough of an extra supply during the day to feed at night, but your production will go down that way eventually. The baby is more efficient than the pump, and the less you put the baby to breast the less milk you will make.
I recommend reading the book the womanly art of breastfeeding - it will help you understand it better.

When I had DD (20 months ago at Winthrop hospital) I breastfed during the day - about 8 am they brought her into me and I returned her back to the nursery at around 10 pm- and I had them give her formula during the evening feedings. I wanted to try and get some sleep at night and no one gave me any issues with leaving DD in the nursery over night.
Dont feel guilty at all !
Just wanted to add - that I never had any issues with my supply when i got home - it takes a few days for you milk to come in and I actually had an over supply of milk the entire time i breastfed/pumped. And when I was home DH fed DD a bottle to give me some extra hours to sleep and that did not affect my supply either (I am not sure if this is true for everyone but I just wanted to let you know my experience)

They brought DD in every 3 hours overnight to BF even when I sent her to the nursery to try to sleep a little between feedings.
I was having supply issues from the very beginning because of severe blood loss at birth and for other reasons no one is still clear on and they brought me a hospital pump to start using between feedings right in the hospital. Nothing ever came out, but I was pumping between every feeding -- so either DD was on the breast or I was pumping every hour the first few days of her life. Never helped me get a supply, but they tried, as did I. I didn't do the extra pumping overnight, though. Just the BFing then. The day we left, they set me up with a supplemental nutrition system (SNS) because DD was losing too much weight from BF alone so she was still BF at the breast, but then we were giving her formula through the SNS (still at the breast) and then I was pumping too.
There's no such thing as a good night's sleep once the baby is here. I'm sorry. But they can give you little 2.5 hour stretches overnight just by sending the baby to the nursery in between while you're in the hospital.
They'll give the baby formula overnight if you want but they discourage it if you want to EBF.

Ditto to all this....your milk won't come in until day 3 or 4 anyway, so there is nothing but colostrum to pump the first few days. And those are some of the most important days! Your baby needs to learn how to nurse, so you really need to do all the feedings yourself.

They kept DS all night, but they fed him Formula. I was BF, but I wanted to sleep. My milk took a few days to come in, so there would be no way I would of gotten much if I was to pump. You usually are just feeding the baby colostrum in the beginning.
I will be keeping baby with me this time around. I plan on BF only in the beginning.
It really depends on the hospital as well. The hospital I delivered DS at kind of pushed for DS to stay in nursery overnight. The hospital I'm delivering at this time around, I think pushes you more to keep baby in your room.

yeah you should def nurse at night if you plan on nursing. the baby needs to get used to it and you need to nurse as much as possible as early as possible for your milk to come in fully.
there wont be anything to pump in the hospital anyway (it takes a few days to come in) so you cant exactly pump all day for the nighttime at that point.

DS went to the nursery at night and the nurses brought him to me when it was time to feed him. For me, I wouldn't have had an extended time to sleep anyway. I was checked a few times at night because of my c-section and high BP prior to birth.
The only reason I pumped at the hospital was when DS ended up in the NICU at 2 days old. I'd feed him for almost an hour, then go back to my room and pump with a hospital grade pump. You really don't pump much at all until your milk comes in. Then, I'd get maybe an hour of rest before I went back down to the NICU to do it all over again.
If you want to EBF, you need to either have DC in the room with you or have the nurses bring DC to you when the baby is hungry.

This is how I feel about it. When it comes to pumping, you're supposed to pump when baby is feeding. So you would need to wake up anyway to pump. At this point, you are better off just nursing him to avoid nipple confusion. They can bring him to you, you feed him, and then send him back. That's what I did with DS when I had him. I made the mistake of not BFing DD in the hospital, and it created problems for us (latching).

many of the hosiptals will not even FF your baby anymore unless you physically cannot. I FF and they would not keep him to feed him. Since I was physically able they broought him to me.

My DD was in NICU so I could not have her in the room with me at night. They brought me a pump and I pumped an ounce or two of colustrum and they added it to her formula bottles and I BFed during the day when I visited her.
I dont know how the rules change if your baby is not in NICU but I got two very good nights of sleep. . . Nurses woke me for 2 minutes, twice each night and I fell right back asleep until the morning - I got over 10 hours both nights LOL and it was wonderful. So, Idont know what I would do if DD was NOT in NICU but since that choice was taken from me I made the best of it lol

My advice is . . .go with the flow.
Try not to listen to everyones well meaning advice. Times have changed and every hospital is different!
You can use their pump you dont have to bring your own - other than that see how you feel and if they "let" you keep the baby with you or in the nursery

dont feel bad. with my first dd i felt guilty not doing night feedings so they brought her in. i was so tired. when i had my other 2 sons i BF while they were with me all day and the stayed in the nursery from 1030pm-7am. if u get up in the night you can walk down to the nusery to see the baby or bring it back to your room. imo rest at night,it makes a big difference during the first few days while your getting adjusted.

DS had latch issues so every night I had to attempt nursing, then pump, then spoon feed the colostrum. Then clean the pump parts! Ugh! So to pump and clean the parts, that's still going to take quite some time.

Yeah, my experience in 2009 was like mrs campos, they kept DS in the nursery overnight and asked me if I wanted him brought to my room to BF. Has it really recently changed?
