Please help me pick a paint color!

I want to re-paint my living room/dining room. I live in a split and everything is VERY open so whatever color I paint my living room I have to paint my dining room. There is nothing separating the two rooms. My house is also very open to the second floor. I'll try to post pictures later.

I got new couches and am looking to warm up the room a little. Right now the walls are light and it just seems too cold in there. I'm posting a picture of my couch. The color is called mocha and it seems that whatever paint color I pick, it's the same as the couches! I also need new curtains and rugs but one step at a time. I'm going away in October with the kids and dogs so DH will be home alone and painting!!! (or at least he better paint!!)

Thanks!!!

You can go a few shades darker or a few shades lighter if you want contrast but in all honesty. I would stick to something neutral and then use accessories to break up the rooms and the color similarities.. Chat Icon

Thanks for the suggestions! I was thinking of chocolate brown curtains in the living room. Would you do the same color curtains in the dining room or different? Right now I have the same curtains in both rooms because if you sit on the couch, you look into the dining room.

I would go with lighter colored in the dining room.. just because you have an open space doesn't mean you have to use the same exact choices for both.. while you don't want the rooms to clash, you certainly want them to transition nicely from one to the other..

so long as you want to keep that same color pallette, you can pick something chocolate brown for the DR but instead use a print and add an accent color to make it pop (a light blue or red perhaps?) same for the liiving room..

I would do a sage green, and do the accent colors chocolate brown, green, and orange.

Or a grey/blue, and do accents of chocolate, tan, and blue.

I was thinking sage green but I just had DH do this in the kitchen. He was about to do a 2nd coat and I told him to hold off because I may change the kitchen to yellow and do the living/dining in green. He's going to kill me.

I like the grey/blue too. That might work. I have some thinking to do!!!

I love your ideas. I'm so torn between this and Julz's suggestions. UGH!

When I lived on the island I also had a split and we did one color for the first floor and a complimentary for the second.

I am came across the color Jute from BM in the new PB catalog and it is a really nice pale strawish color. I would do that color in the hall to lighten the area and a shade or two darker for the first floor. Then I would add in color through pillows, area rug and I would do patterned curtains. I notice when I do solid curtains, something always looks off but when do a pattern it adds more to the room.
If you wanted to do the kitchen in another color, maybe pull an accent color that you have in the living room and use that for the kitchen.

Re: Please help me pick a paint color!

I just stumbled on a new color and impulsively painted my den, I AM IN LOVE!!!!

It's called "Florentine Plaster" by Benjamin Moore.

Looks a little beigey on the pics online but it's more of a greenish, greyish tone. It's gorgeous! It would look GREAT with your sofa. I regret not doing my main living area this color.
