Please help- biting at school
My DS is the biter. He started a new school last Tuesday and he has already pinched once and bit today. It is always over a toy. I teach him that if he wants the toy he should say, "my turn please." We teach that hands are for high-fives and mouths are for blowing kisses. I am so upset and embarrassed. I'm worried that if this continues he'll get kicked out. I don't know if that is irrational or not but that's where my head is right now. (He goes to Tutor Time in Syosset). When he does it, they talk to him about being nice and no biting. I asked that they make sure they are near him while he plays with this child and they said they are/will. Anyone have experience being the mom of the biter? Any advice for me or the school? I am so upset over this. By the way, DS is 26 months. Thanks!!!

Re: Please help- biting at school
The school my ds goes to has a 3 bite policy. They do throw them out. My ds was bit twice already and the girl was put out of school. I think they shadow the child but after the third time , that's it. Talk to them about shadowing and see what the policy is

I think that the 3 bites and your out policy is a horrible policy and I would NEVER put my DC in a program that isn't proactive about something that is really developmentally appropriate. In addition, the educational facility isn't really teaching a child anything by kicking a kid out and in fact, may cause a bigger behavior when they now have to transition to a new program. DS was the biter. I was frustrated embaressed etc. He used to hit other kids but never bite. The second day of his old school he got bit. Then he started biting all the time. I went so far as to have him evaluated by EI for a sensory deficit. Eventually, I found out that the school was not the right fit for him and that was his way of communicating that he was unhappy there b/c after 3 months of several bites, I put him in a new program and he has never bit once. During the time where he was biting, we would read the book teeth are not for biting. We also allowed him to chew on harder foods like a whole apple and I gave him this star vibrating toy to chew on in stead of biting. In addition, I made sure he had some toys he liked to play with and prompted him to share. FM me if you want! I know it is hard, but DS eventually got through it too!

Re: Please help- biting at school
I will cry if he gets kicked out after 3 bites. He is just now getting used to them and not crying at drop-off. I know he loves school, but the biting for him is such an impulse. I don't know how to teach him to monitor that impulse at just over 2. I just hope they really stay on top of him because I want to nip this in the bud. Thanks for the suggestion of the book. I was looking for titles and that sounds like a great one!
Is there a way to teach a child how to control an impulse at this age? I tell him "Nice hands" "Be nice to your friends" "Be gentle" "Use your words". I'm just at a loss at what else to do.
