Please dont move - can you recommend a red wine

Please do not move to the food board, as it doesnt get as much traffic.

Anyway, I really dislike red wine, and Im trying to develop a taste for it. More for the benefits of the resveratrol in it.

Can anyone recommend a mild red wine thats good for red wine novices?

For just starting out, Coppola Diamond Collection Blue Label Merlot is THE best.

I also like Sierra Batuco Cabernet and Potter's Hill Pinot Noir 2008.

i enjoy these 2 for some "everyday" drinking.

ruffino chianti - the $10 bottle, not the $50 bottle Chat Icon

Il Poggio Dei Vigneti Montepulciano - about $7-9 in bottle bargains

I used to dislike red also. Then DH convinced me to try Il Ducale by Ruffino--love Chat Icon

Also, if you like sweet, Sweet Scarlett by Pindar is good. I also like Pythoagris by Pindar.

I found that I really acquired a taste for red once I started drinking it Chat Icon

ETA: I second the Ruffino Chianti, very good!

Re: Please dont move - can you recommend a red wine

If you don't like red wine, resveratrol (along with many other health benefits attributed to red wine) is also found in grape juice. You can also take resveratrol in supplement form.

ETA - If you're determined to drink red wine, though, try a good chianti. They are generally very easy to drink. Ruffino makes a great one. I also love Pindar's Pythagoras and Pindar's Mythology... but I'm a huge red wine fan. Most people who don't like "red" wine don't like dry wines. Ask your local wine store for a suggestion for a slightly sweet red wine instead.

LOL, I do know I can get it in a supplement, I work for a vitamin supplement company....however, I figure I may as well reap the other benefits of it in wine form while Im at it!

Chianti is smooth. I also suggest a Beaujolais or Pinot Noir to those that like white wines.

I felt the same way for so long, but right after I had Riley I developed a taste for it. I love Pinot Noir (Copolla makes a great one) and Red Zinfandel.

I think it must've been Merlot that turned me off initially.

I agree with everything except the Pinot Noir but I think it is just a case of personal preference for me. I also think a light red zinfandel is a good choice. A great inexpensive red that is easy to drink is menage a trois it is a blend of merlot, zinfandel and cabernet.

Try a Spanish Tempranillo (a type of grape) based wine, such as Rioja. I find Tempranillo wines to be sweet and very tasty compared to other reds.

"Casa del Toro" ,cab/merlot mix.1.75 litre bottle, less then 10 bucks. Not dry, a little on sweet side, and just a very good everyday table wine. I am actually having a glass as i write this..

I like Mark West Pinot Nior and Main Red Road from Bedell.

Oh -- also Beaujolais will be coming out with their seasonal red soon -- always so good and so inexpensive.

I started drinking reds with the YellowTail Shiraz and worked my way from there.

Ruffino makes some good ones and so does Blackstone.

Now when you aquire your taste and want some really good kind of expensive bottles let me know!

I'm surprised by all the recommendations for chianti and merlot. They're probably my least favorites. I like my reds a little spicy, and tannin-y.

- For a newbie looking to start cheap, I'd go with a Cabernet. Inexpensive, pretty good Cabernets have a very "grape juice" flavor that is easy to drink. We got one from Sterling in California recently (called "Vintner's Choice" I think) that was $13 and really delicious.
- Personally, I was kind of "eh" about red wines until I tasted an Australian Shiraz, and it opened the door for me. Australian Shiraz is a real gateway drug! Chat Icon And they're pretty cheap - Yellow Tail and Alice White are like $7 a bottle and very easy to drink.
- I'll also throw in a vote for Malbec - my DH didn't like red wine until he tasted a nice Malbec from Argentina. Again, $10-$15 will get you a good Malbec. Plus, Malbecs are becoming really popular in the City lately - bring one to a party and people will think you're super-trendy.

I see what you mean. Pinot Noir can be tricky sometimes. It can be a bit too much if you know what I mean. They can really vary. Ninth Island (Tasmania) Pinot Noir is really good.

I'm not a red Zinfandel person. It's too spicy to me.

Gladiator - Cabernet Sauvignon
Primus - Pinot Noir

AND I never ever thought I would say this but "Black Box" wine is amazing! I've tried the whites and reds and they are out of this world. $20 for the box that equals 4 bottles of wine and it doesn't go bad because it's not exposed to air or light also makes it taste pretty damn good too!!

I was in the same boat as you, but my DH liked it so I would try it every now and again. Now I love it!

My favorites are Malbec, cabernet, and merlot. Argentinian wines are really good Chat Icon Chat Icon
