What kind of bins do you use?

do you use a container that can easily be rotated or do you just mix everything up with a tool or by hand?

How long has your compost mixture taken before it was ready?

do you keep your open exposed to air or closed?

What kind of bins do you use?
*We use a large tumbler-type composter we bought from Costco.

do you use a container that can easily be rotated or do you just mix everything up with a tool or by hand?
*We tumble it several times per week, but also will use a spade/rake to mix it up if we see things aren't breaking down quickly.

How long has your compost mixture taken before it was ready?
*This depends on the weather and if we have worms/bugs in the composter. Obviously in summertime the heat helps move things along more quickly and we don't use the composter in the wintertime.

do you keep your open exposed to air or closed?
*It's closed.

We built a 3 bin system ourselves this year. It's not complete, but you can see it below.

We use a pitchfork to turn it weekly.

As you can see it's exposed to air - there will be removable slats on the front - still unsure if I'll include a lid. It'll help "cook" it, but if we don't it'll still work...just take longer.

It's our first year, so I'm unsure how long it'll take to make a good compost. I'm hoping to use by next Spring.

Chat Icon Chat Icon I'm impressed!! I love it!

For now I used this External Image only because we already had two of them and the garbage men refuse to take garbage if it's in those bins...so i had DH poke a bunch of holes in it and i wan't him to create a tight lock on it so i can roll it around a bit.

Here's the completed bin... we decided not to do a lid on it.

The slats on the front are removable, so you can have them at different heights to make it easier for turning. We decided this was better than a door so it would still contain the contents.

It was built all from pallets and L brackets. Total cost was $9 for the L brackets. All pallets were free!

ETA: What's also great is when you remove the slats you can put them in the wall of the bin (inside the pallet). Kind of like self storage. Chat Icon

Ours is similar to this. We have fencing in the front of it. We turn it regularly.
