If I had a yard I would get one of these.

I have a pile behind my garage. I start it off with some dirt and leaves, then add coffee grinds, eggshells and food bits along the way.
I turn it about once a month. Then I put the whole thing in my garden the following year.

go on tlc.com. They have a new show called Wasted and it's awesome. Two of the episodes they showed how to compost.

My dad has composted my whole life, so it's all second nature to me. (When I had my first apt in college and kept my vegatable scraps, my roommate thought I was nuts and freaked out about roaches)

When we moved to this house, we put all our leaves, clippings etc in a far back corner of our yard, but our yard borders a large field, so I was not going to put food there, for fear of tiny critters making a home near our house. Instead I got this:

I turn it every few days, when I take my scraps out. I keep my scraps in this:

you can add fruit & veggie scraps, grass clipping, leaves, small plant clippings, paper towels, washed egg shells, coffee grinds & filters

things you should never add
meat, fatty or oily products, fish, weeds, diseased plants, dog or cat feces, dairy products.

I use leaves & wood chips & chicken manure, I add very little food since most of our scraps get fed to the animals.

the amount of time it will take to become soil while depend upon how often you turn it, how moist it is & how hot it gets.

we start with a pile of dirt and add all grass clippings, then also add left over coffee grinds, egg shells, all veggies that are cut up ( the ends) that you dont use and leave for a week. we use a pitch fork to air it out and poke throughout the week and then after a week we turn it over, its really cool to see the steam come out from it too. and you just keep adding and adding to however much you need. not dirt though just the grass clippings and food items mentioned above. good luck!
