Please be careful with space heaters!
We bought our house over the summer when the weather was nice and toasty. The previous owners had converted the attic into 2 open bedrooms, but failed to insulate it up there.  They had their 2 oldest daughters sleeping up there with a space heater for warmth.
They left the heater for us when they moved (they moved to Florida). It looked to be brand new.
DH and I plugged it in in our living room (the room is FREEZING!) and went into the dining room to eat dinner. We started to smell plastic burning after a few minutes. We ran into the living room and saw that the whole side of the heater was brown and melting. It totally could have caught fire had we not gotten to it when we did.
I can't help but think - what would have happened if those 2 little girls were sleeping with this thing on and it caught fire. 
Moral of the story - be careful with your space heaters, if you use them. We have sworn them off after this incident and will just bundle up better.

OMG! How scary! I am so glad you guys are OK and caught it in time!
We have one in our breezeway and I NEVER want to use it!

Thanks - we would NEVER use t overnight or when we weren't home - but you hear stories all the time about how people fall asleep with them on and then disaster strikes.
