Planting Ivy Question
I know I'm probably crazy - but I was thinking about planting some ivy in the front of my house. We have deer and was thinking that it would bring some nice greenery to the front but am unsure if deer would like it.
Also, I was wondering if anyone grew ivy without it becoming overbearing... just kind of keeping in the area that I plant it.
Just as a disclaimer - I am sooo far from having ANY green thumb and if you are reading this and saying that this chick has no clue what the he11 she is talking about... your right!!
Any advice would be great!
Thanks!

Re: Planting Ivy Question
I would absolutely not plant ivy. It will take over everything and kill any plants or trees you have. It could even lessen the value of your home if it begins to grow on the side of the house and tap into the foundation.
Have you thought about pachysandra instead? Not as invasive, a very lush ground cover, easy to maintain, and I don't believe deer eat it.

ITA, I would stay away from the ivy !!! and I have seen how it takes over everything, and it looks horrible, maybe go to your local garden center and speak with someone and get better ideas.

Thanks so much!
I will look into pachysandra. Does it come back every year? What does it look like in winter?
Do you think it will run onto the lawn or does it stay pretty much wwhere you plant it?
Thanks for your help!

It doesn't die off in the winter, just goes into a hibernation of sorts like ivy does. Looks pretty much the same in the winter as it does in the summer, except in the summer you have new growth that is a slightly lighter shade of green. It does creep a bit but it does not climb trees or bushes. So as long as you own a weed whacker or a lawn mower, you can mow it back if it gets out of line. My one suggestion with it is that you not have a flower bed that edges it. The pach will move over it and take it over. So as long as you can keep it against your lawn where you will edge it with the mower, you'll be good to go.
