Planting.. HELP

Ok so I have NO clue about this stuff so I hope I dont sound too dumb

I want to get some flowers to plant in my front yard...

Does anyone have a suggestion on what type?

Can I plant them now?

Do they last all summer?

TIA

I am totally with you on this one. I have no clue about these things either.

Fortunately, I have enough inside the house jobs to keep me busy for a few weeks until I can think about outside.

Re: Planting.. HELP

The first thing you should do is check out how much sun the front yard gets. Full sun, partial sun, no sun.

Then go to the nursery, and look for things you like. All of them should have labels which tell you the name of the plant, how big it grows, the conditions it does best in, and if it's an annual or a perennial.

Annuals will only last this season. Perennials will come back after winter. Annuals are typically less expensive but that's because you're not getting something long lasting.

I have full sun and right now, the only things I have growing are lilies, lilac and tulips. But in the past I've had canna lilies, coleus, ornamental grass, daisies, elephant ears, roses... There are so many things to choose from! Chat Icon

I usually plant impatients. They look really pretty when they spread into each other. The only thing with imaptients is that they need to be planted every year, and you need to stay on top of watering them. They are pretty though!

Re: Planting.. HELP

I planted tulips a few months ago and since we had such a warm winter (i live in NC) they came up early and are dead already...however, they will come back next year
I just planted some impatients, calla lillies a rodadendrum (sp?) and I don't know the exact name but its tall and has flowers like bells? It was pretty so I bought it Chat Icon
I try to buy plants that will come back every year and I always try to keep close attention to shaded and sunny areas that way I know which plants to place where in the yard.

Re: Planting.. HELP

We just planted some stuff yesterday. DH and I went to the garden deport on 112 and walked around for a half hour b/c we had no clue what we were doing. We got some help from a guy that works there. e told us to plant some small "bush" type things that have green and yellow colors. Then we planted a plant that blooms purple all summer long. We also planted some smaller flowers sporadically throughout the gardens.

We started with small "bushes" because they were much cheaper and they will eventually grow. I would highly recommend the Garden Depot on 112. You can bring them pics of your yard and they can show you what to plant. This is a free service.

Re: Planting.. HELP

Definately determine the "sun" pattern in the areas you want to plant. Our house has full sun in the front until around 5pm or so. This weekend I planted Day Lilly's (pernineal, so it will come back next year), some calla lilly bulbs & also some sunflower bulbs. I also plan on planting some petunias & marigolds w/impatients. Our front flower bed does have 2 dwarf spruce trees though for color year round. Hostice is another green plant that will survive in almost anything.

I would not plant though until next weekend as that is usually the last threat of frost. I plan on doing mass planting on Saturday
