Planting grass seed
We had a rock garden that we removed and plan to replace with grass. I'd like tips on the proper way to plant the rye seeds.
Should I?
Till the existing dirt or replace with new.
Once that step is done, what comes next?
TIA!

Re: Planting grass seed
Ugh this has been a thorn in my side lately.... I think the best way to properly do this is to get top soil. Not sure... we had what we thought was great soil, and we seeded... it's growing but not as fast as I want lol. So I think top soil is the way to go along w watering.

Re: Planting grass seed
I think you need to loosen it up a bit (existing dirt) then add topsoil and seed if you want to do it right.

Re: Planting grass seed
rye grass is a winter grass and I don't think it will come up in the summer.

it starts to "show" in about a week to 10 days and you can give it a 1st mow in about 21 days.
We did Kentucky Blue, it showed in a week and it's getting there but we are on week two and I want it to be more !! LOL I am way inpatient. There are spots where my DH literally threw it down w his hand and they have come up super thick. Guess we have to wait.

where do you live? you should make sure and get the proper grass for your climate. in the north east it's usually a blend of rye and fescue.
I'm in Suffolk... we went w what the dude at Home Depot said lol. We shall see.... Ya know I could totally be lying about the Kentucky Blue, it may just be a big bag of Scotts lol, so what ever that is ...
