Places to take DS who is an active tornado!
DS is currently 19 months (on the 13th) and is a whirlwind of activity. Certainly not one who sits down for any length of time to play with his toys. He climbs. He runs. He touches EVERYTHING. He is just plain exhausting. We live in Selden and are slowly running out of places to go (and the summer hasnt even begun yet
When I take him to the park, he usually gets bored quickly with the climbing things and would rather run off and explore. Most places are not fenced in and this is a problem (for me anyway ). I took him to the petting zoo and he did have a good time their in their huge sandbox area (DS loves sand) but how many times a week can I pay $13+ to go there? I took him to the beach and he loved playing by the blanket with his shovel and bucket but I could tell by the end of our time (90 minutes) he was ready to start "exploring" and cant imagine what I'm going to do with him when there are people and all of "their" stuff he will want to touch.
He does not do well with confinement so PNPs and strollers are virtually out. Any parks where they are gated? I'd love to just let me go and run without worry that he is going to run off into the woods, the street, parking lot, etc. I took him to Heritage Park and I dont even want to tell you how far he ran off. I feel like I'm constantly running after him and am very envious of the parents who get to sit on a bench for a a while and relax.
Any local suggestions are great appreciated!

Holtsville Ecology site is just a small donation - much less then $13!
Rocket Ship park in Pt Jeff Station is basically fenced it - then you can walk around, look at the ferry and get some icecream - IF HE IS GOOD!!!
If he likes to explore - maybe create a scavernger hunt for him in the back yard. Get a magazine or google some images of things in the yard. Glue them to a piece of paper and have him find them.

I grew up in Pt. Jeff, how is it that I never thought of Rocketship Park
We went to the ecology center last year. I dont remember it being fenced in. Did they change it?
We rent a coop which is part of our problem...no backyard (or front for that matter.)

There is a small hidden park in lake grove called victor park. It is completely fenced in with 2 small playground structures, a small swing area, picnic tables, and a large wooded area perfect for running and exploring. We used to go there a lot when landon was that age.

There is a small park in (what I guess) would be considered Lake Grove..It is off Hawkins Avenue on a residential side road called Patricia Lane...From Selden take 25 and turn left on Hawkins ...You make a left on Patricia and the park is on the left...(if you hit 5 corners you missed it)
Great little park, never crowded, fully enclosed..
There is also another park that I "believe" is fully enclosed in again Lake Grove I believe, that is at the corner of where Pond Path and Hawkins merge....

I don't know where you currently live but Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa has some fenced areas.

Wood Kingdom in Coram has open play everyday and it's $6 if you use a coupon from the various local parenting magazines.
Lake Ronkonkoma Park is fenced in I think, and pretty nice.

If you're a resident in Smithtown, Hoyt Farm is FREE and has animals to pet, a playground to play, and a sprinkler park for the summer which is fenced!!!! There is also a HUGE grassy field that your DS can run around in. I take DS there all the time!
Hecksher Park in Huntington is fenced in as well as the playground in Northport.

Its on Victor Place in Lake Grove - between McGaw and Main Ave. You can access McGaw Ave or Main Ave from Pond Path.
