Re: PIO Tips or Advice???

It's not nearly as bad as you think it will be ..... I heated the area with a heating pad.. (while dh heated the oil) .. then he injected, and I massaged the area and applied heat for about 10 mins. It helped to keep the welts away Chat Icon

PIO Tips or Advice???

Personally I thought it was much less painful then all other injections just make to sure to switch the gauge on the needle, we didn't know to do that the first night and ouch! otherwise it was easy good luck

I don't think it is that bad! I ice for 20 minutes before. DH injects and rubs for 3 and then I lay on the heating bad for 20 minutes. I haven't had any big bruises or welts yet. Just bumps and small bruises. Best of everything!

I iced the heck out of it ten minutes before, felt nothing. Immediately massaged it through the heating pad for 10-15 minutes. Wasn't so bad.

To prepare the PIO, I'd soak the bottle in warm water to "soften" the liquid. It makes it easier to get into the syringe and then inject.

Ice while you prepare the injection. Afterwards, massage the area for about 2 mins and then apply a heating pad for 10-20 minutes.

Also, remember to switch the needle to inject with the correct gauge.

I hardly felt the needle go in. Good luck!

Re: PIO Tips or Advice???

I did many cycles where I paid a nurse to do my IM shots. DH would probably faint if he had to do it. Then it sort of became annoying because I could not go anywhere because I had to meet my nurse etc....

So last cycle I decided I will do it myself. I was very nervous. I had my RE's office draw circles for me where they go. I am lucky that I have a nice size bathroom with a huge mirror over the vanity so I can see everything. And I'm glad I do yoga...Chat Icon

Like everyone says I heat it up with warm water in a small dixie cup before I draw it up. I pinch the area before inserting on my "outter quadrant". I lean on vanity and bend my leg on the side I am injecting. This relaxes the muscle. and I continue to hold the pinch while I insert.

i was very nervous about the "pull out the injetion slightly to make sure no blood". But, I find it not so hard to do one handed. Sometimes I let go and its just sticking in my body. It doesn't freak me out at all.

The first time I did it I was so tense on my arms that I actually pulled something in my neck.

It was easy. I am always amazed how it goes in so easy. then I massage it for a bit and apply a heating pad for 15 minutes.

I know everyone ices but I really don't think you need it. You know what happens when you stick oil in the frig, it gets hard. So I think this creates more issues. The needle does not hurt. In fact something the subQ needles on my stomach hurt, especially when using Lovenox. This does not hurt. Every once in a while you may take the needle out and have a bleeder (I had that the other night...where it just was a bit more than normal...its nothing, it will stop). Just make sure you have gauze pad in your hand when you pull out the needle.

Seriously, I was a wimp and I'm doing it myself with no problem.

Good luck!!!!

PIO Tips or Advice???

I did ice for a few minutes while holding the bottle to warm the oil a little. Then DH did the injection and massaged with heating pad for a few minutes afterwards. I only ever did it this way so I can't say I would have had luck or not without it - but I survived 5 weeks of shots so I'll pass along the info.

Definitely not nearly as bad as I thought. I would put the oil in warm water to losen it up for about 10 minutes. I then iced for 10 minutes. Afterwards, DH massaged it for a few minutes. I didn't use a heating pad because most of the time I had to jump in the car and head to work right away. We had to do ours in the morning.

I found icing the area made my lumps worse so I heated the shot in a heating pad then injected and then sat on a heating pad for 10 min.
