Pincer grasp: How old was your DC?
DS has been trying but doesnt get it yet. I know its still a little early, but he rakes it, and gets it in his hand but cant see it after its in his palm and keeps raking and raking, kwim? He brings his hand to his mouth but has no idea how to get it in. How should I keep him practicing? Just putting cheerios on his high chair?

Nicholas just started to get good at it at 9 months. Christian is still working on it. I think just keep letting him try.

Maybe eat a few cheerios off his tray using the grasp so he can see what you're doing or hand him a cheerio so he can see your hand. After a few times he might try to imitate you. I don't think my baby got this right until about 10 months.

Re: Pincer grasp: How old was your DC?
My ped told me when both girls were little not to give puffs/cheerios etc until they could use the pincer grip. I asked when that was and he said for most children 8-10 months - some sooner, some later. Before that he said it was a choking hazard if they fist the food to their mouths. Not sure how you are supposed to know IF they can do it without trying to give them those foods but - DD#1 7-8 months she had it - I didn't try with DD#2 until 8-9 months. But she did it right away when I gave her a puff so I'm guessing she could have done it sooner.

Re: Pincer grasp: How old was your DC?
DS1 had a really good pincer grasp early on at about 6 months. He would pick at the zipper on my sweat suit. That's when I started him with Puffs. DS2 is 6.5 months and isn't close yet. We give him puffs only because DH thought it would be a good idea. He can't really get them in his own mouth yet, but he likes them.

It's when DC can use pointer finger and thumb to grasp something.
