Picking a hotel in NYC is the worst.
DH and I are staying in the city and my boss is graciously comping my room - but I cannot decide on anything! He didn't give me a price point but everything is either super expensive with so/so reviews or fairly expensive and totally crappy. He himself likes The James, Soho Grand, etc., but those seem too fancy!
Really leaning towards The Redbury - does anyone have any experience?

I'm beginning to think that this whole "modern, minimalist" aesthetic is really a rip off!
Sidenote - I'm sure you've been to Stanton Social, any input?

SoHo Grand really isn't that fancy at all. I have stayed there a few times and honestly the last time they had to change my room 3 times because the toilets were broke in 2 of them.
No experience with Redbury.

This is my favorite NYC hotel! we stay there every year for my birthday weekend. Make sure to upgrade to one of the rooms with a window over the bed and ask for a high enough floor for it to have the window over the bed. love that place

You're right, and rooms are tiny! I'm not into minimalist either but it seems to be the thing now. Maybe the Muse, the Giraffe, Royalton Another group of basic Midtown hotels I'd recommend are the Ameritania, Amsterdam or Bentley.

Stayed there twice in the past year and loved it! Rooms are kind of small, but it's very clean, great location, and nice restaurant attached, too. Definitely recommend!

Picking a hotel in NYC is the worst.
I have stayed in the Soho Grand and the Roxy Hotel (formally Tribeca Grand) well over 20 times each when I worked in the City. Liked them both but preferred the Roxy a little more. Totally not fancy at all. I wouldn't walk the halls in a bathrobe but you don't have to be dressed up lol.

Re: Picking a hotel in NYC is the worst.
Not a "fancy" hotel, but the view was amazing. We stayed at the Marriott Residence Inn/Courtyard Central Park hotel recently. It's new and we stayed on the Residence Inn side. It was super nice, modern, big bathroom, and awesome views! Seriously awesome! Check the pics on their FB page. We were in a Park View room on a floor in the 60's, on the corner with floor to ceiling windows on both walls, and could see central park and also down toward Times Square. There is nothing worse than staying in the city and having a view of an alley IMO!

Agreed. We tend to stay there, the Ritz Carlton down in Battery Park or the Gansevoort on Park Ave.

I love the Kimberly. It's not downtown but midtown east. Plenty of great places to eat around there too.
